Ambit Energy Plans in Texas

Ambit Energy provides electricity plans with variable and fixed rates, as well as a variety of term lengths.

Ultimate Perks plans

This fixed-rate offering comes with high rates, but qualifies customers for perks, like earning Reward Dollars for each month they’re enrolled.

Other key features of these plans include:

  • $9.95 base charge
  • Early Termination Fees (ETFs) of $199
  • Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) charges
  • 12 or 24-month terms

Lone Star plans

With 12 or 24-month terms, their Lone Star plans provide tiered rates per kWh. While these plans may advertise low rates, that can be misleading. You’ll only get the best rates if your home’s energy usage falls within a very specific usage level.

Be sure to closely read the plans’ EFL before choosing Ambit.

It’s also a good idea to take a look at your home’s historic usage level to make sure your usage matches this plan’s tiered rates. You can find your home’s exact usage with Smart Meter Texas.

For quick tips on how to get the most out of your metering tech, check out our Texas Smart Meter guide.

Other electricity plans

The electric provider also offers a range of other plans, including:

  • Total Solar Buyback plans
  • Free & Clear Nights plans
  • Summer Break plans
  • Lone Star Flex plans

Whether you’re looking for a solar buyback plan or a variable-rate, flexible plan, Ambit does have a variety of options. Depending on your home’s energy usage, these plans may work for you.

Please note that we tend to encourage Texans to consider price-protected offerings with more straightforward rates .

Switching, Moving, Ambit Cancellation Fees

Are you an Ambit customer looking for a new energy plan or provider? Be sure to pick one that suits your budget and lifestyle without incurring bill surprises.

Whether you’re switching providers, moving to a new residence, or simply canceling your current plan, we can help you find the best plan for your home’s energy usage. The first step is understanding the EFL.

Reading the Electricity Facts Label (EFL)

Make sure you first review the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) for each power plan you are considering.

Designed to help Texans understand plans when they’re shopping for electricity, the EFL can help you get an apples-to-apples comparison of plans based on average kWh usage rates.

The EFL provides rates for average usage levels, 500 kWh for apartments and small homes, 1,000 kWH for mid-size homes, and 2,000 kWh for larger homes.

To get your home’s precise historic usage, check out the Smart Meter Texas we mentioned above.

Transferring your energy plan

You can easily transfer your current electric service to your new address.

Submit your request as early as possible. We recommend giving your provider 30 days notice to avoid any lapse in service at your current address or your new residence.

If you already have an Ambit electricity plan, you can easily transfer your current service to your new address. Submit your request as early as possible, as it could take one to two business days to process.

How to cancel Ambit Energy

You can cancel your plan at any time online or over the phone.

Please note that if you cancel your plan before your term ends, you’ll likely owe an Early Termination Fee (ETF).

This provider’s ETFs are usually $199, but be sure to check your plan’s EFL to determine its exact cancellation fee.

You can avoid an ETF if you cancel your plan in the last 14 days of your contract, or if you’re enrolled in a variable-rate, month-to-month plan.

Reporting a Power Outage

If you have a power outage at your home, you can contact Ambit, but we recommend reporting the power outage to your area’s Transmission and Distribution Utility, or TDU.

As a Retail Energy Provider, or REP, they don’t service lines or repair outages. Learn about the difference between Retail Energy Providers and TDUs.

To report a power outage in Texas, please contact your local TDU:

Ambit Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ambit a good company?

Ambit is not a top provider in Texas, and due to their multi-level marketing structure, some residents of the Lone Star State may be put off by them.

It’s also important to be aware that their electricity plans often feature slightly higher rates. Plus, their plans can be confusing.

Some feature tiered rate structures, time-of-use designs, and even monthly Rewards, which are a part of their Ultimate Perks. Other plans only include the best rate if you refer friends or family.

We typically encourage Texans to consider more straightforward plans, or plans that are more likely to provide the most predictable bills.

Who bought Ambit Energy?

Ambit Energy was bought by a Texas-based electric company named Vistra Energy, which also owns other light companies, including TXU Energy, TriEagle Energy and 4Change Energy.

Do you save money with Ambit Energy?

Some customers may save money. But note that because it’s a multi-level marketing (MLM) company, they may have costs where competitors don’t.

And that doesn’t even include their base rates, which are not the cheapest rates in Texas. To access their most affordable rates, you must refer friends and family to get monthly credits to use against your bill.

In short, it’s possible that you won’t save money with this company.

How does Ambit Energy work?

Ambit Energy works as a multi-level marketing (MLM) light company that sells electricity through a network of independent consultants.

These independent consultants offer plans to their friends and family, as well as other residential and business customers.

Associates can earn free electricity credits by referring new customers, in order to lower their own home energy cost.

If you don’t refer enough customers or qualify for their tiered energy rates, you may find yourself with a very high electricity bill.

What is Ambit Lone Star Core plan?

Ambit Energy Lone Star plans offer some percentage of renewable energy.

While some of its Lone Star plans are fixed-rate electricity plans with term lengths of 12 to 24 months, others offer month-to-month, variable-rate electricity.

The variable rate no-contract plans carry no cancellation fee.
