Why is my Arlington energy bill so high?
Home Energy Club vets each energy plan to help you avoid misleading gimmicks that result in expensive electricity bill surprises. Unexpectedly steep energy bills can also occur for various other reasons, including:
- The fixed-price plan you chose has expired. Your fixed price energy plan has expired without your renewing it or enrolling in a different plan of your choosing. It is routine practice for energy providers to move customers to plans with their highest rates when fixed-price plans have expired without the customer taking action to renew or switch to a new plan.
- Rates have been increased by the electric company. When you enroll in a variable rate plan, your electricity rates can be raised by the energy company at any time. Caution is advised when a plan offers “wholesale prices” because the phrase is associated with variable rate energy plans, which often lead to electricity bill surprises.
- Your energy use does not match your energy plan. For example, an apartment dweller using the monthly average of 500 kWh will be surprised with a sky-high electricity bill as a result of signing up for an energy plan designed for very large homes using 2,000 kWh or more. One of the secrets of choosing the best energy plan is to select one that is the right match for your home’s energy usage. Reviewing the Electricity Facts Label (read our guide) helps you avoid costly mistakes.
- Other factors that can increase your energy costs include energy inefficiency in the home and spikes in electricity usage caused by the extreme heat of Texas summers.
