Texas Renewable Energy Plans

Written by Frank Eakin | Last Updated 02/06/2024

Renewable energy plans are sourced with electricity from utility-scale renewable energy generation facilities in Texas and other states.

Wind and solar power are the main sources of green energy in the Lone Star State, but hydro and nuclear power are also viable sources of clean energy.

While enrolling in a 100% renewable energy plan helps rid the grid of the pollutants causing climate disruption, it’s also a smart money move. Many clean energy offerings cost less than comparable fossil-sourced plans.

So, why pay more to pollute? Check out our cheap green energy rates below.

What is Green Energy?

Sometimes referred to as renewable energy, green energy is electricity that comes from sources that don’t cause pollution.

While home energy has historically been powered by coal and natural gas, clean energy sources like wind, solar, nuclear, and hydro are growing in popularity.

Check out what the U.S. Energy Information Administration has to say about electricity sources in the United States.

Below, we break down the most common sources of clean energy in the Lone Star State.

Wind energy

Wind power is generated using wind turbines. Huge propellers are turned by wind, and the blade’s rotor connects to a mechanical shaft which spins a generator, creating electricity.

The electricity enters the Texas electricity grid and is transmitted through the utility lines, which are managed by TDUs, and delivered to your residential and business customers.

If you’ve ever taken a road trip out west, you may have seen these large wind turbines spinning out alongside I-10. Did you know? Texas is actually the largest producer of wind energy in the United States of America!

Solar energy

Unsurprisingly, with its excesses of sunshine and heat, Texas is becoming a large producer of solar energy as well.

Solar panels located at large farms in Texas absorb sunlight with photovoltaic cells. Inverters convert the energy into a usable alternating current, which is delivered to the electric grid and then to homes and businesses across the state.

While residential panels are growing in popularity, many energy providers now offer solar power plans without the need for costly panel installation.

Due to the economies of scale realized by utility-size solar farms, green energy can be produced much more efficiently than with rooftop panels.

Plus, renewable energy from the grid is now competitively priced with fossil-sourced energy, which is referred to as grid parity.

Of course, if you already have solar panels, or you’re planning on getting them installed, it can still be a sound investment. Your residential panels can often power your house during the day, and you can use grid electricity at night.

Many providers even offer solar buyback plans, so if your panels produce more power than your home can use, you can sell that energy back to the grid typically without having to lift a finger.

Nuclear energy

Many people want to know, “Is nuclear energy renewable?” The complicated answer might surprise you. While nuclear power is considered a clean source of green energy, it’s not technically a renewable energy source.

This is because the elements used to generate nuclear power are limited resources. Uranium, for example, is a very rare element that must be mined.

That said, nuclear power is a green energy source. And the benefit is that you can get far more electricity from a miniscule amount of uranium than you’d get from huge amounts of either natural gas or coal.

According to the Texas Comptroller, nuclear power is one of the larger sources of energy in Texas. In fact, based on ERCOT’s fuel mix report, nuclear power made up nearly 10% of Texas’ energy production in 2023.

That’s more than solar energy, and all with only two nuclear power plant sites.

Safeguard our planet and save money

It may surprise you to learn how much CO2 emissions are produced by fossil fuel-sourced electricity plans.

That means you can reduce CO2 pollution by simply enrolling in a clean energy plan. Note that enrolling in one of these great renewable electricity plans isn’t the only way to save and reduce your home’s carbon footprint.

If you want to do your part, you can use our guide to reduce your home’s energy usage and significantly lower your energy costs.
