Last Updated: April 17, 2025

Texas energy companies offer their customers several bill payment options. These include online payments, autopayments, and payments by mail, in-person and over the phone.

Autopayments and online payments offer ease and convenience, while the other options are useful for customers who don’t have access to online tools or prefer non-digital methods.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bill Pay Options

How many days late can you pay an electric bill?

You should pay your bill before the due date provided by your retail electric provider. As per government regulations in Texas, providers must set a due date no earlier than 16 days from the date of the bill or the postmark on the envelope. If you do not pay your bill by the due date, you may be subject to late fees or a switchhold. Many providers offer a payment assistance program for those who need help or extra time paying their bills. However, you may also face a switchold if you select such a program.

How do I pay my Direct Energy bill over the phone?

You can call 866-374-6299 to pay your Direct Energy bill over the phone. Be sure to have your account and payment details handy.

How can I pay less for electricity?

You can reduce your electricity bills by reducing your energy consumption. To do this, use energy-efficient appliances, switch off appliances when not in use and optimize your thermostat temperatures for efficient usage. If you have a time-of-use plan, you can also reduce your bills by shifting your energy usage to hours of low prices. Lastly, switching your electric provider can also help lower your energy bills.

Are there utility bill assistance programs?

You can access many assistance programs if you struggle to pay your energy bills. For example, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded assistance program designed to reduce the costs associated with home energy bills, energy crises, weatherization and minor energy-related home repairs. Many utility companies and energy providers also offer customers bill assistance programs. Contact your utility or energy provider to learn more.
