Shell Energy is a highly trusted electricity company in Texas offering straightforward guaranteed plans with affordable, fixed rates. Shell notably specializes in solar and renewable energy plans, making it a good choice for Texans who want to minimize their carbon footprint with a more sustainable energy plan.

As part of the same 100-year old company that operates gas stations nationally, Shell is building long-term relationships with Texans by offering competitive no-gimmick plans and solid customer care. However, as of now, Shell Energy is no longer enrolling new customers.

Shell Energy Plans and Rates

Shell Energy offered residential customers several electricity plans with various rate structures and plan types, such as fixed-rate plans, time-of-use plans and 100% green energy plans.

At the time of our research, Shell Energy offered nine plans to Texans. For comparison, Gexa Energy touts an impressive 17 different plans. While Shell didn’t offer the most plans, it still offered a variety, including renewable electricity and time-of-use plans.

When reviewing the following plans, note that all Shell Energy plans also include transmission and distribution utility (TDU) delivery fees — one a flat monthly fee and one a charge per kilowatt-hour.

From the nine plans reviewed, we recommend the 100% Renewable Plan as Shell Energy’s best plan overall due to its numerous term lengths and commitment to sustainability by providing 100% renewable energy.

Shell Energy Review

Shell Energy scored 4.5 out of 5 stars in our review methodology. The company obtained especially high marks in the customer service and online experience due to high ratings from current customers.

We combined our 2025 energy survey data with third-party sources like Google, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, and the State of Texas Public Utility Commission Complaints Statistics to score each provider.

What Customers Think of Shell Energy

To understand how real and current customers feel about Shell Energy, we read through dozens of customer reviews from top sites such as Trustpilot, Yelp, Google Reviews and more to gain insight into the pros and cons of the energy provider.

What Customers Like

  • Easy sign-up: Many customers appreciate how easy it is to navigate the website and sign up with Shell Energy plans, according to recent Google reviews
  • Customer service: A recent review commends Shell’s customer service, saying it was fast and easy to reach a representative via phone call, according to a Google review

What Customers Don’t Like

  • Issues accessing account: Customers have complained about issues signing up for service with Shell Energy and stated that it took days and multiple phone calls to customer service to access their account online, according to Google Reviews
  • Solar Buyback plan: Recent reviews state that Shell Energy’s bills are significantly higher than other providers and that solar power generated by solar panels was not credited back.

Shell Energy is not Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited and has zero customer reviews on the platform. This is most likely due to how new Shell is to the residential energy market.

Shell Energy has a widespread brand reputation and a solid legacy with its backing of oil giant, Shell. We’ve found that many customers are inclined to rely on the company due to this legacy connection. In one of our customer interviews, one Texas resident said, “You feel like it’s a company that’s not going to just disappear.”

Shell Energy Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shell Energy a good company?

Shell was a top energy brand internationally. Because its retail energy unit, Shell Energy, was relatively new in the electricity market, the subsidiary did not have many reviews at the time it operated. The management built Shell's reputation in the residential power market by offering only price-protected and guaranteed plans, with no gimmicks that could cause bill surprises.

Does Shell Energy have an app?

Shell had an app available on Android and iOS devices. Customers could use the app to pay bills, renew plans and review energy usage summaries.

Is Shell Energy expensive?

Shell Energy's rates for fixed-rate renewable energy plans were competitive with energy deals from other suppliers offering straightforward, no-gimmick plans. The company offered plans that let customers lock in rates for fixed terms. The rate remained similar regardless of monthly usage, producing more predictable bills.

Predictable bills were especially important during summer and winter months when bill increases were most frequent. Their prices were similar to other competitors that offered no-gimmick plans, like TriEagle Energy.
