While some of its plans have confusing bill credits and gimmicks, its rates are lower than Reliant Energy, our top-rated provider.

Express Energy Plans

Express Energy offers four electricity plan types, all with fixed rates. Its term lengths include 12-, 24- and 36-month contracts.

The Flash and Power Flash plans provide $100 bill credits based on your usage. You qualify for the credit only when your monthly usage hits 1,000 kWh for Flash plans or 2,000 kWh for Power Flash plans. We don’t typically recommend bill credit plans because rates vary dramatically if your usage falls outside of the kilowatt-hour level required for the bill credit. These fluctuations lead to inconsistent and frustrating bills.

The Fast Lane plans offer a $50 bill credit when you use a minimum of 1,000 kWh per month. You’ll pay a higher rate per kWh than the Flash plans but it has less fluctuation in rates across all usage levels.

Based on our research, the Express 12 is this provider’s best plan for straightforward pricing without much variation in cost between usage levels. This 12-month plan locks in your rate for a year and makes budgeting easier with simple rates.

Our Thoughts on Express Energy

Express Energy ranks 22nd out of the 25 Texas electricity companies we reviewed. It offers a solid variety of plan types, including straightforward fixed-rate plans, bill credit plans and green energy plans (for an additional monthly fee).

The Flash energy plans offer very cheap electricity rates at 1,000 kWh, while the Power Flash plans advertise cheap rates for homes that use 2,000 kWh or more. However, these plans advertise these cheap rates through bill credits, which can be confusing and hard to secure consistently, resulting in unpredictable energy costs.

In our review, the Express 12 and Express 36 plans are the provider’s best offerings. These no-frills plans promise competitive prices and more predictable monthly energy bills.

The retail electric provider’s plans default to 9% renewable content, but you can upgrade to 100% renewable energy during enrollment. This upgrade adds $6.95 to your monthly bill and offsets your usage with renewable wind power. While this fee may not amount to much on your total bill, many modern electric companies offer 100% green energy plans with no extra charge.

Express’s satisfaction guarantee means you can try any Express Energy plan for 60 days and cancel without fees. This benefit prevents you from feeling stuck in an expensive long-term contract.

How Do You Move or Transfer Service with Express Energy?

You can transfer your Express Energy service to your new address free of charge. The provider offers two excellent, no-gimmick energy plans in the Express 12 and 36 options, which include low rates and predictable bills. Plus, the ETF isn’t as pricey compared to other providers when you cancel your plan early. You’ll pay $20 per month left in the contract, while other providers often charge flat fees that can range from $150 to $395.

Although low rates are tempting, we recommend understanding your energy usage before signing up for a bill credit plan. While Express offers plans we like, you may want to consider other providers if you want more variety of plan options. However, its Express 12 and 36 plans stand out for cost and predictability.
