BKV Energy is a Texas electricity provider that specializes in fixed-rate plans with no base charges and contract terms ranging from 12 to 36 months. It offers two plan types: traditional fixed-rate plans with 29% renewable energy content and 100% renewable plans with slightly higher rates. Fixed-rate plans lock in your electricity price for the entire contract term, offering predictable monthly bills.

The Texas deregulated energy market is divided into six service areas, each managed by a different transmission and distribution utility (TDU) or “poles and wires” company.

Founded in 2022, BKV Energy is a relatively new electricity provider in Texas. However, the company stands out by offering lower fixed rates than many competitors.

BKV Energy Plans and Rates in Texas

Unlike many electricity providers that offer a wide range of plans, BKV Energy focuses on fixed-rate plans, which can be classified into two subtypes:

  • Traditional fixed-rate plans: The BKV Bluebonnet plan locks your electricity rate during a contract term of 12, 13, 24 or 36 months. All versions of this plan have 29% renewable energy content and no base charges from BKV. However, note that any base charges applied by your local utility company will still apply.
  • 100% renewable plans: The BKV Bluebonnet Green plan provides fixed rates with no base charges for contract terms of 12, 24 or 36 months. This plan contains 100% green energy, but has slightly higher rates than the traditional Bluebonnet plan.

BKV Energy includes the 30-Day Power Pilot benefit in all its Bluebonnet plans. If you’re unsatisfied with your electricity plan, you can cancel it during the first 30 days without incurring an early termination fee (ETF). After the 30-day guarantee period, all BKV Energy plans have an ETF of $20 per each remaining month in your contract.

Bluebonnet plans also include the BKV Energy Rewards loyalty program, through which customers earn 25 VoltPoints per month. These points can be used to participate in gift card raffles or claim discounts at select stores and restaurants.

What Customers Like

What Customers Don’t Like

  • Inflexible with service disconnections: BKV Energy receives complaints for its strict policy toward late payments, making service disconnections even during extreme weather. One customer reported a service disconnection during a winter storm.
  • Slow security deposit refunds: A customer who left a negative review had to contact BKV Energy three times to claim a security deposit, twice by email and once by phone.
  • High rates after contract expiration: BKV Energy normally offers affordable fixed rates. However, if your contract ends and you don’t select a new plan, the company places you on a higher variable rate. One customer who left a negative review reported a $466 bill after his plan ended, claiming the company did not notify him.

Who Should Pick BKV Energy?

BKV Energy specializes in fixed-rate plans with predictable monthly bills. Here are the customer types most likely to benefit from a BKV Energy electricity plan:

Budget-Conscious Customers

Bluebonnet plans feature fixed rates and predictable bills, with contract terms ranging from 12 to 36 months. BKV Energy rates are often below the market average, making it a viable option for customers who seek affordable rates without “pricing gimmicks.”

BKV also offers a flexible early termination fee (ETF) of $20 for each remaining month in your contract. This fee can help you avoid large cancellation fees if you decide to switch providers in the future.

Green Energy Enthusiasts

The Bluebonnet Green plans provide 100% renewable energy while maintaining the benefit of fixed rates for a 12, 24 or 36-month term.

Just Moved to Texas

BKV specializes in simple, straightforward, competitively priced energy plans, making it a solid choice for newcomers to the Lone Star State.

How To Get Started with BKV Energy

Enrolling in a BKV Energy plan is a simple process that consists of the following steps:

  • Input your ZIP code to view BKV electricity rates in your specific location.
  • Choose between the Bluebonnet and Bluebonnet Green plans.
  • Select your preferred contract length.
  • Provide your contact information, service address and mailing address.
  • Specify your service start date.
  • You can choose electronic bills and automatic payments as optional features.

BKV Energy may request a security deposit based on your credit score and payment history. If your current electricity plan has not reached the end of its contract when you switch, your current provider will usually charge an ETF. However, you’re exempt from paying the ETF if you switch plans while moving to a new address.

Contacting BKV Energy

BKV Energy offers the following communication channels for its customers:

In the event of a power outage, contact the local transmission and distribution utility (TDU). You can find its name and phone number on your monthly power bill. BKV Energy operates exclusively as an electricity retailer with no direct control over the power grid infrastructure.

Moving or Transferring Service with BKV Energy

To transfer your BKV Energy service to a new address, complete the Transfer of Service online form. For assistance, call customer support at 855-258-4797.

If you’re moving to another address within the same TDU territory, you can keep your current electricity plan. However, if you move to a different TDU territory, you must end your current plan and select a new one. BKV Energy does not charge cancellation fees in either scenario, but your TDU may apply interconnection fees at your new address.

BKV Energy does not specify an exact time frame for service transfers, but we recommend completing the online form as soon as you have a move-in date. This will ensure your service is transferred smoothly, without delays or interruptions.

Is BKV Energy Right For You?

We recommend BKV Energy if you’re looking for an electricity plan with fixed rates, transparent pricing, predictable monthly bills and no base charges. If you’re looking for ways to reduce your environmental impact, BKV offers 100% green energy plans with only slightly higher rates. BKV plans are available with contract terms of 12, 13, 24 or 36 months. Additionally, the BKV Energy Customer Rewards program is an excellent perk, offering gift card giveaways and discounts at stores and restaurants.

BKV Energy offers predictable electricity costs, but the company does not offer features like solar buyback plans or discounted EV charging rates. If you own a home solar system or an electric vehicle, you might want to consider an electricity provider with specific benefits for these technologies.
