Our Thoughts on Just Energy

Just Energy scored 4.5 out of 5 stars in our review of Texas electricity providers. Our scoring system evaluates customer satisfaction, online experience, customer service and customer retention. Among surveyed customers, 63% would recommend Just Energy to friends, and 54% believe they are paying a fair rate for their electricity service.

The company excels in customer retention and satisfaction, with scores of 4.8 and 4.6 out of 5 stars, respectively. This is reflected in our survey, where most Just Energy customers stated they were unlikely to switch providers when their contract ended. Customers also highlight the company’s predictable rates — many remain with Just Energy because they are familiar with its pricing and know what to expect each month.

Just Energy earns 4.5 out of 5 stars for online experience. The company website is informative, with clear descriptions of all electricity plans, but is sometimes slow to respond. At 4.0 out of 5 stars, the company’s lowest score is for customer service. While most online reviews of Just Energy are positive, some negative reviews suggest that the company can be inefficient when handling complaints.

Just Energy Reviews

Just Energy earns 4 out of 5 stars on Google, based on over 4,500 customer reviews. Most positive reviews highlight its affordable rates and helpful sales representatives, while negative reviews are often related to high power bills on time-of-use and bill credit plans.

Just Energy has a much lower score of 1.16 out of 5 stars at the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but this comes from fewer than 300 reviews. This is a common trend among Texas electricity providers: customers tend to leave positive feedback on Google, while customers largely use the BBB for complaints.

In our survey, most Just Energy customers selected the company based on its affordable rates or recommendations from their family and friends. Some customers also value having the ability to upgrade any plan to 100% green energy for a small monthly fee.

Where Is Just Energy Available?

Just Energy offers electricity plans in all major transmission and distribution utility (TDU) service areas.

Who Should Pick Just Energy?

With 11 electricity plan options and contract lengths ranging from 12 to 60 months, Just Energy can meet the electricity needs of many different types of Texas homes. However, the following customer types are most likely to benefit from this company’s electricity plans:

Deal Seekers

Just Energy offers fixed-rate plans with discounted rates as limited-time deals. For example, the Sustainable Life Bundle 12 charges a $29.99 set-up fee but then offers a rate of only 14.1 cents per kWh in Greater Houston and 14.6 cents per kWh in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In comparison, most fixed-rate plans exceed 15 to 16 cents per kWh as of April 2025.

Green Energy Supporters

Most electricity plans from Just Energy include 31.5% renewable energy by default, but you can upgrade any plan to 100% green energy for a fixed monthly fee of $9.99. Thanks to this perk, Just Energy is a viable option for homeowners looking to reduce their carbon emissions and environmental impact.

Owners of Large Homes

The Just Energy Mega Saver plan offers a $150 bill credit if your monthly consumption is at least 2,000 kWh. If you own a large property that is consistently above this threshold, you can earn up to $1,800 in annual bill credits. However, you’ll lose the bill credit whenever your monthly consumption drops below 2,000 kWh. We don’t typically recommend bill credit energy plans. However, you may benefit from this plan type if you consistently meet or exceed the discount threshold. Carefully review your home’s usage before signing up for such a plan.

Remote Workers

Just Energy offers the Days Free Plan with 12, 24 or 36-month contract terms. This plan provides free electricity between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m, making it an attractive option if you work from home. However, remember that this plan charges around 21 cents per kWh outside of the free period, meaning it works best if you can limit your evening consumption. You can also benefit from this plan if you are usually away from home after 4:00 p.m., minimizing your consumption during the high-rate hours.

Long-Term Planners

Most electricity providers offer contract terms ranging from 12 to 36 months. However, the Just Energy Basics plan is available with a 60-month contract — one of the longest plan terms you can find in Texas. You may want to consider this option if you want to lock your rate and forget about shopping for electricity plans for five years.

Just Energy’s Electricity Facts Label

The electricity facts label (EFL) contains important information about your energy charges, TDU fees and contract terms. Comparing EFLs can help you choose the best plan for your home’s energy needs. Here’s an example EFL of Just Energy’s Simple Choice 12 plan and key terms to remember.

  • Average price per kWh: Your EFL lists averages estimated on typical kWh usage. These prices offer an idea of what your rate might be, but reviewing your usage and the energy charge provides a more accurate estimate for your bills.
  • Base charge: Just Energy charges a $4.95 monthly fee for electricity use for most plans. You pay this amount regardless of your usage. You won’t pay this fee with the Renter’s Choice plan.
  • Energy charge: Your energy charge shows what you’ll pay per kWh. By comparing the charge to the average price, you can avoid gimmicky plans.
  • TDU delivery charges: The pass-through distribution and customer charges are utility fees. You pay a distribution charge for the cost per kilowatt-hour and a monthly flat customer charge.
  • Type of product: This section details whether the energy plan has a fixed or variable rate. Just Energy offers only fixed-rate plans.
  • Contract term: This section shows your plan’s contract length, which includes 12, 24, 36 and 60-month options from Just Energy.
  • Early termination fee: This is a fee you pay for canceling contracts before the end date. Just Energy charges a $175 cancellation fee.
  • Renewable content: This section displays the percentage of your electricity plan that is renewable energy. The Texas average is 33%, but you can upgrade any Just Energy plan to 100% green energy for $9.99 a month.
  • Other disclosures: The disclosure chart explains price variations during your contract term. Your fixed-rate plan energy charge remains steady, but TDU fees can vary.

Just Energy transfers electric service based on the location of your new residence. To determine if your new address is in Just’s service area, you can call the customer service team. Just Energy: Multiple Plan Options with Various Contract Lengths and Optional Features

Just Energy stands out among competitors for its wide selection of electricity plans, including four types of fixed-rate plans:

  • Simple Choice: Standard fixed-rate plan
  • Renters Choice: Fixed-rate plan with no cancellation fee
  • Basics: Fixed rates for up to 60 months.
  • Sustainable Life Bundle: Discounted fixed rate if you pay a $29.99 sign-up fee.

Based on our survey, Just Energy customers appreciate its predictable rates, and most plan to stay with the company when their current plan ends. Our survey also suggests that Just Energy customers often recommend the company to their friends and family.

Just Energy offers two optional features for all electricity plans:

  • Upgrade any plan to 100% green energy for $9.99 per month.
  • You can add a solar buyback rate to any plan if you have a solar system.

However, many of its competitors offer 100% green energy at no additional cost. While solar buyback may benefit some customers, Just Energy does not publish its buyback rate for excess solar energy, making it hard to compare these plans to offerings from competitors. Online forums suggest that the company pays around three to four cents per kWh, while some competitors pay 14 to 16 cents per kWh, making them a better choice for solar owners.

Just Energy also offers two bill credit plans and five time-of-use plans:

  • You can save with bill credit plans if your consumption remains within the eligible range.
  • You can save with time-of-use plans if most of your usage falls within the free energy periods.

However, both plan types come with the risk of high power bills if your home energy usage falls outside of their ideal conditions. Due to their predictable pricing, we recommend straightforward fixed-rate plans from Just Energy as the preferred option. The company has received complaints about high power bills during low-consumption months, likely from customers enrolled in bill credit plans.

Frequently Asked Questions About Just Energy

Will Just Energy charge me a cancellation fee?

Just Energy charges $175 when you cancel your plan before the end date. However, you won't owe the fee if you cancel within three days of enrollment.

Also, Texas law exempts you from cancellation fees if you switch electricity plans while moving to a different address. This rule applies even if Just Energy serves both addresses.

Do the Just Energy rates shown include everything?

Advertised rates on Just Energy’s website and the plan’s EFL are the average price per kilowatt-hour. These rates provide an estimate, but your usage determines the actual cost. Multiply your typical kilowatt-hour usage by the energy charge and utility delivery fee for a more accurate monthly energy cost estimate based on how and when you use energy.

Does Just Energy run a credit check?

Yes, credit checks are a standard practice among Texas energy companies. It’s a soft credit check, so it won't impact your score. Energy suppliers use credit checks to determine whether you owe an enrollment deposit or not.

What is the best Just Energy electricity plan?

We recommend Just Energy’s Simple Choice 12 plan for a year of predictable bills. Just Energy offers a variety of plan options, so there may be a better fit for your needs. For example, if you shift higher usage to the weekend, Just Energy’s free weekend plan might lead to lower rates. Consider how you use energy and compare electric plans to choose one that suits your home.
