The TXU Energy Free Nights and Solar Days energy plan lets you enjoy free electricity from 8 p.m. to 4:59 a.m. and charges a fixed rate for daytime usage. You won’t even owe the utility delivery fees for your nightly usage.

This 100% renewable plan offsets your usage with renewable energy certificates (RECs), each representing one megawatt-hour of clean power. TXU Energy purchases solar RECs on your behalf for daytime use and wind RECs to cover nighttime use.

TXU Energy electricity rates vary by utility service area, but the average price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) ranges from 18.4 cents to 22.3 cents per kWh for the Free Nights and Solar Days plan. These averages account for an assumed percentage of usage occurring during the free electricity periods at night.

While this plan offers 100% free electricity at night, it has an energy charge for energy used during the day, from 5 a.m. to 7:59 p.m. Daytime rates are high to offset the free hours, with energy charges ranging from 21.4 cents per kWh to 27.8 cents per kWh, depending on your location.

Because of these high daytime rates, time-of-use plans may not deliver on the promised savings. However, if your usage meets or exceeds the assumed nighttime percentages, you may be able to save.

TXU Energy Free Nights and Solar Days Plan Features

The TXU Energy Free Nights and Solar Days plan offers fairly predictable rates across all usage levels, according to the advertised rates. However, these prices assume that a set percentage of your electricity consumption occurs during the free hours.

Here are more details about the plan’s features:

  • Fixed-rate plan: You can lock in your price for the length of the contract, so you won’t have to worry about rate fluctuations with the energy market.
  • 12-month contract term: Secure a steady rate for an entire year.
  • 100% renewable: This plan offsets 100% of your electricity use with solar and wind power, whether sourced from the grid or replaced using renewable energy certificates.
  • Free electricity nights: You won’t pay energy charges or utility delivery fees during nighttime hours.
  • Satisfaction guarantee: You have 60 days to try out the Free Nights and Solar Days plan and decide if it’s right for you. If it’s not a good fit, you can cancel without paying fees within two months of signing up.
  • $150 cancellation fee: You can cancel this plan at any time, but you’ll pay a $150 early termination fee (ETF) if you cancel after the satisfaction guarantee period. You can avoid the ETF if you’re moving to a new utility service area, which would require enrolling in a new energy plan.
  • High energy charges: Time-of-use energy plans levy high energy charges, with the Free Nights & Solar Days plan charging between 21 and 27 cents per kWh. Meanwhile, a straightforward plan, such as the Frontier Utilities Budget Saver 24, has an energy charge of 11.47 cents per kWh.

Is TXU Energy’s Free Nights and Solar Days Plan Right For You?

Free electricity is an enticing offer, but the strict usage time requirements may not suit the needs of every Texas household.

Time-of-use plans are most effective when they align with your consumption schedule. This free nights plan might be a good option for homes where no one is home during the day, so most of your energy use is at night.

It may also suit your needs if you shift your usage habits to use more energy at night than during the day. This may include waiting to do energy-intensive activities until after 8 p.m. These activities may include doing laundry, washing the dishes and even running the air conditioning.

The cost of the daytime energy charge might outweigh the benefit of free nights for homes with high — or even normal — energy use during the day. In particular, this plan may not save money for remote workers or stay-at-home parents who use energy throughout the day for work, cooking or childcare.

And because of Texas’s warmer climate, just keeping your house comfortable during the day may use up enough energy during paid hours to make time-of-use plans more costly than they initially seem.

Consider your typical energy habits before choosing a time-of-use energy plan to ensure you will benefit from free electricity and avoid overpaying for the daytime energy charge.
