Our Take on Xoom Energy

In our provider review, we gave Xoom Energy 4.2 out of 5 stars, which is about 7% below the 4.5 out of 5 average of the other providers we rated. While the provider’s customer retention score was 4.8 out of 5, customer satisfaction and the online experience have some room for improvement.

In our February 2025 survey of more than 1,000 Texans, 67% of Xoom Energy customers said they would recommend the provider to a friend and have been with the company for over a year. One of the main reasons customers stick around is the cost, which is surprising given the above-average rates. Xoom electricity rates cost more than the average in Texas but are in line with providers like TXU Energy. However, TXU offers a wider variety of plan options.

For its online experience, Xoom earned a 3.8 out of 5. Once you enter your ZIP code, the site only displays its featured plan with a 36-month contract and a $395 early termination fee (ETF) if you cancel before it ends. You can find additional options when you click the tabs for other plan types. Notice that each plan defaults to advertise the rate for using 2,000 kWh. You’ll need to review the electricity facts label (EFL) to compare the cost for your actual energy usage, as the rate may vary.

Xoom has solid customer ratings and has been in the Texas energy market for nearly 15 years, offering fixed, variable and renewable energy plans. The provider is accredited by the Better Business Bureau, but it doesn’t have a rating or customer reviews on its website. However, customer reviews on Google give Xoom Energy a rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars, which helped its overall rating from our team.

Xoom Energy Overview

Xoom Energy serves multiple states throughout the country and offers same-day electricity services in Texas. You can get same-day power as long as the request is processed before 5 p.m. However, if you prefer planning ahead, you can schedule your start date up to 60 days in advance.

Xoom advertises benefits such as no enrollment fees, no service interruptions during the switch, pricing for any budget, average billing options, and a free loyalty program. While these seem like unique perks, they’re standard in the Texas market. However, loyalty programs are not as common. You can earn rewards like gift cards and benefit from local deals through the Xoom Xtras program by managing your account, submitting reviews and playing games. Consider comparing electricity plans in Texas to meet your energy needs before choosing a provider based on potential rewards.

Xoom Energy Reviews and Ratings

Xoom Energy is a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited business in good standing, though it doesn’t have customer reviews or a BBB rating on its website. Based on the opinions of 501 customers, the company earned a 4.4 out of 5 stars overall rating on Google reviews.

Online reviews highlight mostly positive experiences with customer service and several mention enjoying the rewards program. Some one-star ratings mention troubles with auto-pay. Here are a few examples of customer reviews:

What Customers Like

“Great service and easy loyalty program to use and navigate. They really make you feel valued as a customer with giveaways and their rewards program.  I’ve been able to redeem a few gift cards and always enjoy seeing what new promos are available. Glad to be a customer and have always had a good experience with them,” Stephanie said.

“New to Xoom. So far, so good. When starting anything new, there are always questions. The few times I called, I was able to speak to someone on the first call, and the items were resolved. Thank you,” Mario Q. said.

“Great rates and rewards program. Also great communication and professional customer service team,” said Jules D.

What Customers Don’t Like

“Switched to Xoom Energy earlier this year to take advantage of their cheap electrical rates. Switching over was pretty easy. I set myself up for auto-payments as soon as I set up my account. Then, in June, my service was canceled out of nowhere. I called Xoom. Apparently, I didn’t pay a bill in April, but they were taking my money in June because I was set up for auto-pay. So apparently, the payments did work; they just forgot to take it one time? No warning from the company or reaching out, just canceled without warning,” said Greg G.

“I was a customer for a year, and when I went to change providers due to a better price, they wanted to charge me $10 because they got a notice I was disconnecting from them. Beware of hidden fees,” Matthew U. said.

Who Should Pick Xoom Energy

Xoom Energy is a good choice for Texans who prefer a no-frills energy plan and take the time to understand a plan’s EFL. Before switching, compare your current electricity rate and EFL with XOOM Energy’s plans to understand the details and see if you could save money. Pay close attention to the base fee and energy charge rather than relying only on the advertised rate, which can sometimes be misleading.

Xoom offers a renewable energy plan, but it only offsets 50% of your electricity usage. This means that while reducing your carbon footprint, a portion of your energy still comes from traditional sources. Providers like Gexa Energy and Green Mountain Energy may be better options if you’re committed to going fully green. These options offer plans that offset 100% of your electricity consumption with renewable energy credits.

How To Get Started with Xoom Energy

You can sign up for an Xoom Energy electricity plan online after comparing options and finding a plan you like. You’ll enter your service address and other basic information. Xoom Energy performs a credit check to determine if you owe an enrollment deposit, a standard Texas energy supplier practice.

After signing an agreement and confirming payment, Xoom Energy handles the transfer from your previous provider. You don’t have to contact your previous provider, as the transition should be seamless and without power interruption.

Contacting Xoom Energy

If you have questions, you can contact Xoom Energy using your online account, calling customer care or with the online form.

Contact your TDU to report a power outage. Xoom Energy offers phone numbers for each TDU in Texas on its contact page.

Moving or Transferring Service with Xoom Energy

You can initiate a service transfer by calling Xoom’s customer service team. They will ask about your new address and preferred service start date for a seamless switch. Xoom offers same-day electricity service to get your light on within 24 hours or less. The earlier in the day you call, the more likely your request will be processed in time for same-day service.

You won’t have to pay an ETF if you’re moving outside of Xoom Energy’s service area. Instead, you’ll cancel the service and switch to another provider. You can use Home Energy Club to search and compare energy plans for your new address.

Is Xoom Energy Right For You?

Choosing the right provider for you depends on your preferences, energy usage and budget. You might save money by switching to Xoom Energy if your current electric rate is higher than what Xoom offers. However, check the plan’s EFL to understand how potential base fees and energy charges align with your needs. Consider the ETF from your current company to avoid unexpected charges. While Xoom’s rates are above the Texas average, they might still offer savings depending on your usage and a rewards program for added perks.
