About Hidalgo
Hidalgo, Texas, is located in Hidalgo County and has a population of about 14,183, according to the 2019 census. The city sits on the north side of the Rio Grande on the southern border of Texas and Mexico. Spanish colonists first settled Hidalgo in the 1740s, and the city experienced several name changes. In 1852, John Young established Edinburg, which became the Hidalgo County seat. In 1876, the town was officially incorporated into the county, and it finally got its name “Hidalgo” in 1885.
