Spark Energy Plans in Texas

Spark Energy plans offer electricity rates in Texas, but a number of their plans are not straightforward and include gimmicks that can cause bill surprises.

Take your time and research thoroughly before enrolling in Spark Energy plans. While some of their plans are straightforward, many of them have complicated structures that can lead to surprising energy costs.

It’s critical that you review the EFL for any energy plans you are considering. Make sure to choose a plan that’s the right match for your home’s usage.

Fixed-rate plans

This energy supplier’s plans include fixed-rate electricity that locks in your rate for a range of terms, although currently their terms are 12 and 15 months.

Some of their electricity plans include renewable energy content, but none of them are 100% green at this time.

Some of their current plans include:

  • Free Nights 12
  • Spark Instant 12
  • Choose 15

If you’re interested in their free electricity plans, be certain to review the EFL for these plans and note the rates for the non-free hours, which are often high.

For no deposit electricity, energy providers will generally not need a deposit if you meet their credit requirements. You can also check electric companies that offer pay as you go “prepaid” plans that do not require deposits.

Another thing to watch out for: low advertised rates with high base charges.

Be wary of plans with high base charges

While some of Spark’s electricity plans have straightforward rates, the company also has energy plans that have the potential to produce severe bill surprises.

This is through the use of low advertised rates that are offset by excessively large base fees regardless of your energy usage.

These base charges range from $160 to over $400 per month. If you have a large home that consistently uses large amounts of energy, these plans may result in competitive pricing.

That said, if you have a small home, apartment, or condo, your relatively low usage may result in an average rate of up to 85+ cents per kWh, depending on the plan’s terms.

  • Mail bill payment, sending your checks to Spark Energy, P.O. Box 3015, Houston, Texas 77253

Transferring, Switching, and Cancellation Fees

Transferring electric service from your current home to a new home in another deregulated energy zone in Texas is as easy as notifying your provider.

Plus, your energy supplier shouldn’t charge a fee for making the transfer.

Contact Spark at least 30 days in advance of your move-out/move-in to understand their fees.

Switching providers? Do your research

If you’re switching providers, be sure to compare rates and plans before getting locked in with your new plan.

We’ve made it easy to get the inside scoop on energy shopping with our quick-to-read Savvy Shopper’s Guide.

When comparing plans, be sure to review the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). This Texas-mandated document provides an apples-to-apples comparison of rates at standard usage levels, 500 kWh, 1,000 kWh, and 2,000 kWh.

How do I cancel Spark Energy?

To cancel your Spark Energy service, contact them at 877-54-SPARK (77275), and wait for 10 business days to cancel your agreement.

Based on your plan type and the Terms of Service, you may be required to pay a cancellation fee, or Early Termination Fee (ETF).

Their ETFs range from $100 to $200, so check your plan’s EFL before canceling.

Reporting An Outage

If you experience a Spark Energy power outage, call the Transmission & Distribution Utility company (TDU) in your service area.

As a Retail Energy Provider (REP), Spark doesn’t maintain lines or repair outages. For the quickest service, contact your utility company.

Here’s the contact information for the current Texas TDUs:

  • Oncor: 888-313-4747
  • AEP: 866-223-8508

About Spark Energy

A natural gas and electricity service provider in the United States, Spark Energy was founded in 1999.

It may help to compare Spark’s energy plans to those of other providers. Because of their misleading plan pricing structures, we typically recommend other providers with more straightforward rates.
