About Pharr
Pharr is a city in southern Texas, situated within Hidalgo County. It’s part of two metropolitan areas, McAllen-Edinburg-Mission and Reynosa-McAllen metropolitan areas. The name comes from Henry Newton Pharr, a local sugar planter who also served as the director of the State National Bank of New Iberia, Louisiana, and owned the 8,000 acres that included what is now Pharr. The city’s population expanded rapidly, going from nearly 33,000 in 1990 to close to 80,000 in 2019. Cali Carranza, a Tejano musician, and Baldemar Velasquez, a labor-union activist, hail from Pharr.
