Energy Price Trends in Dallas

Dallas benefits from a deregulated energy market, offering residents the freedom to choose from a variety of competing electricity providers in Texas, rather than being tied to a single regional provider.

Deregulation fosters a competitive pricing environment, empowering residents to select the most suitable energy options for their homes and budgeting requirements. To make informed decisions and find the most affordable energy rate for your home, you can compare the top Texas energy companies and plans on Home Energy Club.

Average Electricity Rates in Dallas

The average residential energy rate in Texas is 14.19 ¢/kWh. The national average is 16.11 ¢/kWh, about 12% higher than the Texas average.

Oncor Electric’s Move-in, Move-out, and Transfer

Oncor Electric Delivery serves as the transmission and distribution utility (TDU) for the Dallas area. While you have the freedom to choose any electric company in Dallas, Oncor Electric Delivery takes care of Dallas power outages and ensures electricity delivery to your property.

For detailed information on rates, power outage updates, and move-in instructions, please refer to the relevant sections below.

Residential Electricity Service in Dallas

For those planning to move to Dallas, a variety of residential electricity services are available in the area, including Cirro Energy, TXU Energy, and Reliant Energy. Home Energy Club is a valuable resource for comparing different rates in your vicinity. Once you find a plan that fits your budget, you can request Oncor Electric Delivery to commence electricity delivery on your chosen start date.

Move-in, Move-out, and Transfer Service

If you’re relocating to or from Dallas, you can request your current electricity provider to stop your plan. For long-term plans, if you’re moving out of the area, you have the option to cancel your service without incurring an early termination fee.

If your electricity provider also operates in your new city, you can transfer your service. To ensure the most affordable rate in your new zip code, it is prudent to compare energy rates using Home Energy Club before initiating the transfer.

Switching Electricity Providers

Should you decide to switch energy providers, your new electricity company will assist you in transitioning from your old contract to the new one. However, be cautious of early termination fees (ETFs) if you switch plans for your current home before your contract end date.

The Electricity Facts Label (EFL) associated with each plan provides the fee you’ll be charged if you cancel early. In some cases, switching to a plan with a much lower rate might offset the early termination fee, but it’s crucial to do the math beforehand. By waiting until 14 days before your current contract expires, you can avoid the fee. Additionally, you can often enroll in a plan weeks or months ahead of the start date to secure the advertised rate at that time.

For more helpful information on moving to Texas or switching providers see our Electricity Shopping Guide.

By 1871, Dallas had become officially recognized as a city. Modern-day Dallas, along with surrounding cities, are growing at a high rate, gaining more residents in recent years than any other metro area in the nation.

Who has the cheapest electricity rates in Dallas?

HomeEnergyClub.com has identified the top four most trusted electric companies that currently offer the cheapest electricity rates in Dallas. The energy companies claiming the top four spots in Dallas at this time are:

Home Energy Club is home to vetted energy plans using TrustPlan™, and is a one-stop resource where you can compare 40-plus energy companies and find trustworthy reviews and ratings, exclusive discount rates, complaint stats, and information specifically about Dallas electricity. You’ll get instant results on rates in the Dallas metro area by entering your zip code. What is a good rate per kWh in Dallas?

On HomeEnergyClub.com, the best per kWh rates available in Dallas plummeted to as low as 5 cents and 6 cents due to a crash in commodity prices, but seasonal variations are normal and commodity costs will rise again. Now is a good time to consider enrolling in an energy plan for 24, 36, or 60 months so that you can lock in the exceptionally low rates. Recovering commodity prices will naturally result in higher power generation costs and increases in residential energy rates. The average cost of residential electricity in Texas has been about 11 cents/kWh in recent years.

Who is the best alternative in Dallas to Power to Choose?

The best alternative to Power to Choose in Dallas is HomeEnergyClub.com because special discount pricing is available due to its substantial bargaining power with energy providers, and just as importantly, the premier comparison site manually vets each plan with its unique TrustPlan™ process that cuts plans with deceptive gimmicks that result in bill surprises. Power to Choose is a government website that doesn’t apply a thorough quality control process or vet plans. Texas state government leaders have been considering shutting the Power to Choose website down due to the high volume of consumer complaints (see articles in the Houston Chronicle and other media outlets).

Where can I compare electricity companies in Dallas?

As a trusted comparison site with high customer ratings (4.9 out of 5 stars on Google) and objective information, HomeEnergyClub.com conveniently compares Dallas electric companies and energy plans side-by-side. To help you avoid bill surprises, each energy plan on the site is vetted using its TrustPlan™ process. The site is user-friendly, has no membership fees and works as follows:

  • For Dallas power company rate comparisons, simply enter your zip code
  • Special low discount electricity rates that are often lower than those found on the providers’ own sites are among those available to you due to the site’s bargaining strength with energy companies
  • Thanks to the TrustPlan™ vetting process, plans with misleading gimmicks have already been weeded out
  • Concise, simple-to-follow guides are provided to help make deciding on the best energy plan easy, fast and accurate
  • Customers have the confidence of knowing that the site provides objective information. As the site is a true consumer advocate, preferred treatment is never sold to energy providers
  • Freely use the site without club membership fees, a service made possible because energy providers pay the site a small fee to be listed, and these fees are built into the special discount rates made available to you

With thousands of verified reviews, ratings, and complaint statistics from such unbiased sources as the BBB, the State of Texas, and leading independent review sites, Home Energy Club makes choosing the best energy plan for your home an easy process.

Who vets Dallas electricity plans to eliminate gimmicks?

Each energy plan in Dallas is vetted manually by the HomeEnergyClub.com staff so that deceptive, tricky electricity plans that result in bill surprises are eliminated. Its TrustPlan™ vetting process was developed using extensive analytics and experience acquired since the company’s 2011 founding. To assist you in choosing the best energy plan for your home, the following are additional features on the site:

  • The home page includes a helpful filter that allows you to exclude electricity plans with less predictable billing
  • The “Compare Plans” feature on the site makes it easy to compare plans side-by-side with information such as rates, cancellation fees, and other essential data
  • Energy companies such as Gexa Energy offer a 60-day guarantee on plans, allowing you to switch to one of their other plans in the event the one chosen isn’t a good fit with your home’s energy usage level
  • Details such as benefits and warnings are noted in each option’s “Plan Details” section
  • Handy guides empowering you to select the best energy plan for your home

Knowing that bill surprises are caused by summer-month spikes and other factors besides deceptive gimmicks in energy plans, Home Energy Club strives to reduce the chances that Dallas residents will experience unwelcome billing shockers.

Where to find objective electric company reviews and ratings in Dallas?

The key to finding objective energy company reviews and ratings is to avoid relying on websites with potential bias, such as sites that sell electricity. The following are objective, independent sources used by Home Energy Club for reviews, complaint statistics, and ratings:

  • The Public Utility Commission of Texas
  • The Better Business Bureau (BBB)
  • Home Energy Club/Amazon surveys of Amazon’s customer base

Why is my Dallas energy bill so high?

You can reduce your chances of receiving high energy bills in Dallas with the vetting process and objective ratings and reviews at Home Energy Club. Tricky gimmick plans have already been eliminated before you do a side-by-side comparison of energy plans on the site. Unexpectedly high electricity bills also happen for other reasons, including:

  • Your home’s electricity use is not a match with your energy plan. Many times, terrible bill surprises are the result of, for example, an apartment-dweller choosing a plan intended for large homes that use 2,000 kWh or more when the monthly usage for the apartment is actually more like 500 kWh. Be sure to review the Electricity Facts Label and read our guide to be sure your home’s level of energy usage matches the energy plan you select.
  • Your fixed-price plan has expired. If you are on a fixed price energy plan, action needs to be taken before its expiration to avoid an increase in the cost of electricity. Energy providers tend to automatically charge customers with expired plans their highest rates. The secret to avoiding this type of bill surprise is to renew your plan or set up a switch to another one within 10 days before the expiration of your current plan.
  • The electric company has increased their rates. When you choose a variable rate plan, your energy rates can be increased by the energy company without warning and at any time. Use caution when considering plans offering “wholesale prices” because such plans have non-fixed variable rates, which commonly leads to staggering bill spikes.
  • Other factors that can increase your energy costs include energy inefficiency in the home and three-digit feels-like temperatures in summer.

For more information, visit HomeEnergyClub.com.

Where to find electric vehicle charging stations in Dallas?

Location information for electric vehicle charging stations in Dallas can be found on the Dallas page at HomeEnergyClub.com. Thanks to an evolving automotive industry, electric vehicles (EVs) are more and more common. If you like the idea of reducing your CO2 emissions, you might consider an EV for your next car. The size of your current carbon footprint may surprise you.

Is Reliant Truly Free Nights and Weekends (or days) worth it?

The pattern of electricity usage in your Dallas home determines whether the Reliant plan with free nights and weekends is a good option for you. Note that during the hours when electricity is not free, the cost per kWh is quite high. Electricity-draining activities such as running your clothes dryer should be saved for the free hours. Time of use plan you choose may be an ideal choice, as long as most of your electricity is used during hours when it is free. To learn about energy plans with free hours of energy use, go to HomeEnergyClub.com.
