Chariot Energy Rates, Plans and Reviews

Written by Frank Eakin | Last Updated 02/20/2025

Chariot Energy earned a 3.7 out of 5 overall in our provider review. While the provider offers a wide range of 100% green energy plans, it earned low scores in key categories, such as customer satisfaction and online experience. However, the provider has excellent renewable plan options at competitive rates — just watch out for bill credits, which may cause bill surprises. The provider also offers solar buyback plans, which can benefit you if you have a solar system on your home.

Chariot Energy’s electricity rates range widely, depending on the plan you choose. However, its prices are generally competitive with the statewide average, which is 15.60 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), according to November 2024 data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Chariot Energy Plans and Rates

Chariot Energy offers five energy plan types with a unique and wide range of term lengths. All of its plans are sourced from 100% renewable power. We recommend the Blaze 12 plan as a straightforward option without bill credits or time-of-use rates. You secure a set rate and predictable bills for 12 months or longer if you choose.

Chariot’s Shine solar buyback plans can help you earn money for the excess energy your solar panels produce. You’ll earn credits toward your electricity bill to offset the cost. The compensation rate, or the amount you earn, varies by location, quantity and timing. These plans may offer benefits if you frequently produce more energy than your home uses. We recommend comparing the costs to the benefits before signing up for a solar buyback plan

GridEdge plans are a bill credit option where you can earn a $90 credit each month if your usage meets or exceeds 1,000 kWh. However, we generally don’t suggest bill credit plans as the best option because of the specific usage requirements. If your usage falls outside the specific range, your bill may spike, making it unpredictable.

The EV Ride option is a time-of-use plan offering free electricity from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. to charge your EV overnight. This plan may be a good fit if you can shift your energy usage to the free periods, but a typical fixed-rate plan may offer better rates.

Our Thoughts on Chariot Energy

Chariot Energy offers a wide range of plan types and term lengths, so it may have an option that suits your needs. However, the provider doesn’t have the highest ratings for customer satisfaction. Despite that, it does appear to offer competitive energy rates with energy plans that may provide predictable monthly energy costs, based on our research of the provider’s plans.

It only offers 100% solar energy, so if you’re a Texan who wants clean energy powered by solar — even if you don’t have your own solar system — Chariot may be worth considering. However, you can secure 100% solar plans from other providers with higher customer service ratings, such as Reliant Energy or TXU Energy. Additionally, you may find cheap rates with options like GridEdge plans, but its large bill credits can lead to expensive bills if you don’t meet the specific usage requirements.

Chariot Energy offers a solid option for solar buyback plans ranging from 12 to 36 months, with credits that never expire as long as you stay with the company. However, you risk losing the credits if you switch providers. We generally like the look of Chariot’s plan offerings. However, its scores in our survey of 1,600 Texans give us pause.

Chariot Energy Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Contract length variety
  • Low-cost cancellation fees
  • 100% renewable energy plans

Cons:

  • Low customer satisfaction
  • Few 12-month plans
  • Complex rate structures

Chariot Energy Review

Chariot Energy scored 3.7 out of 5 in our provider review. Despite lower-than-average scores, Chariot offers a solid range of green energy plans at competitive prices.

Chariot Energy scored 3.7 out of 5 for customer satisfaction. Despite that, 50% of respondents said that they believe they pay a fair rate for their energy plan from Chariot Energy. Chariot also scored 3.7 out of 5 for its online experience. Low score aside, 67% of respondents said that they found it easy to pay their bills online.

The provider’s highest-scoring category is customer retention, in which it scored a 4 out of 5. When scoring energy providers, we also consider standing with independent review websites. Chariot has 4.3 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, which looks positive. However, Chariot also has 1 out of 5 stars with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT).

Chariot Energy Customer Reviews

Out of the 600-plus Google Reviews, customers rate Chariot Energy 4.3 out of 5 stars. BBB gives Chariot an A+ rating, and the 11 customer reviews give Chariot a 3.5 out of 5 stars. While this may seem low, many other Texas energy providers receive 1 out of 5 stars from customers on BBB, while others aren’t accredited at all.

Positive reviews highlight an easy enrollment process and great rates.

“Switching my provider to Chariot Energy as they are reputable and offer competitive rates! They were an easy switch and I’m excited to use them for my energy provider,” wrote Kelly G

Another reviewer shared her experience as a solar owner.

“I love saving money with my new solar panels and Chariot Energy. I’m super happy to have $48 be the most expensive electric bill during the hottest part of the year. The rest of the year, I’m throwing power back to the grid and receiving credits,” said Lisa K

Negative reviews display some confusion about what goes into the total price.

“I signed up for an electric plan and later found out the advertised rate was not inclusive of the Oncor delivery charge, which was quite misleading,” Onemli D. said.

“I was charged an additional price, such as a delivery fee, that was not mentioned on their rates when I was searching,” another reviewer said.

Chariot Energy vs. the Competition

Chariot Energy scored 3.7 out of 5, which is significantly lower than TXU and Gexa Energy. Despite its low scores across several categories, Chariot Energy offers a wide range of plan types, including a solar buyback offering that’s worth consideration if you have a solar system.

Chariot Energy’s Electricity Facts Label

All providers must include an electricity facts label (EFL) with every plan they offer. This state-mandated document explains your energy charges, TDU delivery fees and important contract terms. We suggest comparing EFLs and fully understanding the details before enrolling in a new plan. Here’s an example EFL of Chariot’s Blaze 12 offer.

  • Average price per kWh: These rates are average estimates at key usage levels. The estimated rates are only accurate to the usage level listed and do not reflect exactly what you will pay.
  • Base charge: Depending on your Chariot Energy plan, you may owe a flat fee of up to $9.95.
  • Energy charge: Chariot charges the price listed in this section per kWh of electricity you use.
  • TDU delivery charges: This fee covers electric delivery and grid maintenance by your TDU. The charges typically include a flat fee per billing cycle and a charge per kilowatt-hour.
  • Type of product: This section lists the plan type, typically fixed or variable rate.
  • Contract term: This section shows the length of your plan. Chariot plans range from one-month variable-rate plans to 15 to 36-month fixed-rate plans.
  • Early termination fee (ETF): You may owe a fee for canceling your plan before the contract ends. Chariot typically charges a $15 fee per remaining month on the contract.
  • Renewable content: This lists the percentage of your usage that comes from green energy. Chariot Energy plans are 100% renewable, while the state average is 33%.

Note the energy charge and delivery fees, which combine to yield your average price per kilowatt-hour. We also recommend comparing the average price per kilowatt-hour across all usage levels to assess how much a given plan may cost, depending on how your usage varies from month to month. We captured this EFL  on February 11, 2025.

What Is the best way to contact Chariot Energy?

You can contact Chariot Energy through its online form, phone call or email.

While Chariot Energy sells electricity plans, your utility company manages the electric grid and restores power during outages. Report any power outages directly to your local utility company.

Moving or Transferring Chariot Energy Service

If you’re moving with the Chariot Energy service area, you can transfer your service to your new home free of charge. Contact Chariot Energy at least a month before your move to notify it of your new address and move-in date. If your new residence is outside the provider’s service area, you can terminate your plan with no penalties.

Final take: Chariot Energy Offers 100% Solar Energy but has Low Customer Satisfaction Scores

Although Chariot Energy isn’t at the top of our list, we still like the provider’s variety of renewable energy options. You can choose 100% green fixed or variable rate plans with contracts from one to 36 months, including unique 15 and 18-month plans.

We recommend understanding your energy usage to determine the best option, especially before you sign up for the lowest rate. Some bill credit plans may mislead you and have specific usage criteria. The provider also didn’t perform well in our review across key categories, including customer satisfaction, online experience and customer retention. You can find a variety of plan options, including solar energy and solar buyback plans, from providers with higher ratings, including Reliant Energy and Green Mountain Energy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chariot Energy

Will Chariot Energy charge me a cancellation fee?

Yes, Chariot charges a $15 fee for each remaining month of your contract. This structure can result in lower cancellation fees if you are close to the end of your contract, unlike providers who charge a flat fee of $150 to $395. However, it's worth considering before signing a long-term contract, as canceling a 36-month plan after just a few months could be costly.

Do the Chariot Energy rates shown include everything?

The advertised rates on your plan's EFL are estimated averages that include energy charges, utility delivery fees, base charges and assumed discounts. These rates may assume you qualify for perks like time-of-use rates or bill credits, which can make the price appear lower than what you may actually pay. We recommend checking the energy charge rate and comparing it to your usage for a more accurate estimate.

Does Chariot Energy run a credit check?

You can authorize a soft credit check or pay a refundable deposit during enrollment. The credit check doesn’t impact your score or ability to enroll. Chariot uses this information to decide if a deposit is needed.

What is the best Chariot Energy electricity plan?

We recommend the Blaze 12 electricity plan for 12 months of simple rates and predictable bills. The best energy plan for you depends on your usage and energy habits. Plus, Chariot offers solar buyback and EV plans that may benefit some customers more than traditional fixed-rate options.
