Spark Energy Plans in Texas
Spark Energy plans offer competitive electricity rates in Texas, but a number of their plans are not straight-forward and include gimmicks that can cause bill surprises. Take your time and research thoroughly before enrolling in Spark Energy plans. It is critical that you review the EFL for any energy plans you are considering; you want to make sure to choose a plan that is the right match with your home’s usage.
Fixed Rate Plans
Spark Energy plans include fixed-rate electricity that lock in your rate for up to three years, including partial year plans, and plans with 12, 24 and 36-month term lengths.
If you are interested in plans from light companies in Texas offering free electricity, such as so-called free nights and weekends plans, be certain to review the EFL for these plans and note the rates for the non-free hours, which are often high. For no deposit electricity, energy providers will generally not require a deposit if you meet their credit requirements. You can also check electric companies that offer pay as you go “prepaid” plans that do not require deposits.
Be Cautious of Plans with High Base Charges
Spark electricity plans in Texas include some straight-forward rates that produce relatively predictable energy bills, but the company also has energy plans that have the potential to produce severe billing surprises. These plans have large base fees regardless of the amount of energy you consume.
If your home consistently uses large amounts of energy each month, these plans may result in competitive pricing, but if you have a small home, apartment, or condo, your relatively low usage may result in an average rate of up to 30+ cents per kWh.
Bill Pay & Login
For Spark Energy bill pay information, review your information and make payments online via the Spark Energy login page. You can also call an operator at the Spark Energy phone number, 877-547-7275. On your Spark Energy monthly bill, you will see the average rate that you paid.
You can access your Spark customer account online at the Spark Energy login page.
Switching, Moving and Cancellation Fees
Transferring service from your current home to a new home in another deregulated energy zone in Texas, is simple and your electric company should not charge a fee for making the transfer. Contact Spark Energy at least 30 days in advance of your move-out/move-in to understand their fees. Based on your plan type and the Terms of Service, you may be required to pay a cancellation fee.
Reporting An Outage
If you are experiencing a Spark Energy power outage, rather than call Spark, call your area Transmission & Distribution Utility company (TDU).
Below are the TDU phone numbers for the various Texas zones:
- Oncor (Dallas area): 888-313-4747
- AEP: 866-223-8508
- Centerpoint Energy (Houston): 800-332-7143
- Texas New Mexico Power (TNMP): 888-866-7456
About Spark Energy
Spark electricity plans occasionally have large monthly base fees of $200, which may produce competitive pricing if your home has high energy usage, but can produce extremely high rates if you have a small home (close to 20 cents/kWh) or apartment (over 30 cents/kWh). Be sure to read the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) associated with each Spark Energy plan you’re considering.
