Founded in 2010, Veteran Energy supports U.S. military veterans by donating a portion of its profits, with over $900,000 in cumulative donations as of March 2025. Additionally, the company earns 4.4 out of 5 stars in the Home Energy Club scoring methodology for electricity companies. 

The provider also offers bill credit plans with a $50 discount when your monthly usage reaches 1,000 kWh. This plan type can help some customers save but may cause bill surprises if your usage doesn’t meet the credit requirements. Veteran Energy also allows you to upgrade any plan to 100% wind energy for $6.95 per month — by default, its plans only include 9% renewable energy.

Veteran Energy offers a smaller selection of electricity plans than most competitors, but it features some of the lowest fixed rates in the market with no gimmicks or confusing discount rates. The company also provides contract terms of 12, 24 or 36 months.

Veteran Energy Plans and Rates in Houston

Veteran Energy rates in Houston range from 13.7 to 16.9 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) as of March 2025, based on a monthly consumption of 1,000 kWh. For reference, the average residential rate in Texas is 14.68 cents per kWh, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Veteran Energy Plans and Rates in Dallas

As of April 14, 2025, Veteran Energy rates in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex range from 13.7 to 16.9 cents per kWh, based on a monthly usage of 1,000 kWh. This price range falls around the Texas average of 14.68 cents per kWh, as reported by the U.S. EIA.

Veteran Energy Plan Types and Guarantees

Veteran Energy offers three types of electricity plans in Texas:

• Fixed-Rate Plans: The Secure and Select plans lock in your electricity rate for their entire contract term. Both plans have a monthly base charge of $9.95, which drops to $0 if your usage is at least 1,000 kWh. The Secure plan is available with 12 or 24-month contract terms, while the Select plan offers 24 or 36-month terms.
• Bill Credit Plans: The Valor plan offers a $50 bill credit at 1,000 kWh per month, which lowers your effective rate below 13 to 14 cents per kWh. However, if your usage falls below 1,000 kWh during a billing period, your rate increases to over 18 cents per kWh. The Valor plan is available with 12, 24 or 36-month contract terms.
• Green Plans: You can upgrade any Veteran Energy plan to 100% wind energy for an additional monthly fee of $6.95. The company also offers the Secure Green plan, which includes 100% renewable energy by default and comes with a 24-month contract term.

If you switch or cancel a Veteran Energy plan before the contract ends, the early termination fee (ETF) is $20 for each remaining month. For example, if you end your plan with three months left in the contract, the cancellation fee is $60. Many competing providers don’t offer a flexible ETF, with flat fees of up to $150 to $395 regardless of the remaining contract term.

Veteran Energy also offers a 60-day satisfaction guarantee for new customers. If you start an electricity plan and are unsatisfied with its rates or features, you can switch or cancel within the first 60 days without paying the ETF.

Our Take on Veteran Energy

Veteran Energy offers some of the lowest fixed rates on the market through the Secure 12 plan, making it an excellent choice for customers who value predictable bills. However, the company has limited options, offering only fixed-rate and bill credit plans. 

One of its fixed-rate plans includes 100% green energy by default, and you can upgrade other plans to renewable energy for a small monthly fee. However, if you’re looking for features like solar buyback programs or discount EV charging, you must compare plans from other providers.

Veteran Energy scores 4.4 out of 5 stars in our review methodology for Texas electricity providers. The company earns above-average customer satisfaction and retention scores but below-average ratings for online experience and customer service. 

Our survey shows customers often stay with Veteran Energy because it offers lower rates than most competitors. However, the company has received complaints about customer service and billing issues at the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Its website has a basic design, but provides all the necessary information about its electricity plans.

Where Is Veteran Energy Available?

Texas’s deregulated electricity market is divided into six service territories, each managed by a single transmission and distribution utility (TDU). These TDUs are known as “poles and wires” companies since they operate local power grids but are not electricity providers. Veteran Energy serves five of the six TDU areas:

• AEP Texas North: Abilene, San Angelo and most areas of northwestern Texas
• AEP Texas Central: Corpus Christi, McAllen and most areas of southern Texas 
• CenterPoint Energy: Greater Houston and most surrounding ZIP codes
• Oncor Electric Delivery: Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex and most surrounding ZIP codes
• Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP): Multiple service pockets around Dallas-Fort Worth, south of Houston, and southwest of Midland and Odessa

As of April 2025, Veteran Energy is not yet available in the Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) service territory. However, Lubbock residents can access electricity plans from its sister company, 4Change Energy.

Remember that Veteran Energy is a retail electricity provider (REP) and does not directly manage the local electricity grid. To report power outages, downed power lines or other grid-related issues, contact the local transmission and distribution utility (TDU). You can find the name of your TDU and its contact information on your monthly power bills.

Moving or Transferring Service with Veteran Energy

The Veteran Energy website does not provide specific instructions for transferring your service to another address. However, you can start this process with any energy provider by contacting its customer service department. Be prepared to provide the following information:

• New service address
• Current service address
• Move-in date for your new address

Although Veteran Energy offers same-day service for requests submitted before 2:00 p.m., we recommend scheduling the transfer as soon as you have a move-in date to avoid delays.

If your new address is within the same TDU area as your current address, you can usually transfer your existing plan. However, if you’re moving to a different TDU area, you must end your plan and start a new one since electricity rates vary by region.

Texas law exempts you from ETFs if you switch electricity plans while moving to a different address. Even if you’re satisfied with your current plan, we recommend checking the rates available at your new location — you may find a better deal.

Is Veteran Energy Right For You?

We recommend Veteran Energy if you want an electricity plan with affordable fixed rates, transparent pricing and predictable monthly bills. The Veteran Secure 12 plan typically offers rates below 16 cents per kWh, and if you enroll in the middle of spring or fall, you may find rates under 15 cents per kWh.

While Veteran Energy offers 100% wind energy as an optional feature, it comes with a monthly cost of $6.95. Some competing providers offer 100% renewable energy at no additional cost, but some charge higher kilowatt-hour prices than Veteran Energy. Paying an extra $6.95 per month for green energy can be cost-effective, but you’ll need to compare providers to asses the best option for your needs. While other providers charge as much as $9.95 for a green upgrade, providers such as Rhythm Energy and Gexa Energy offer only 100% green energy without any upgrade fees.

Veteran Energy also offers bill credit plans with usage-based discounts of $50 when your monthly consumption reaches 1,000 kWh. These plans offer rates below 13 cents per kWh if your usage is consistently above 1,000 kWh, but you can expect to pay 17 to 19 cents per kWh below the minimum threshold.
