Since most customers who post reviews about energy companies do so when they have a complaint rather than a positive experience, it’s important to look for patterns of problems in customer comments and not focus on composite ratings.

At Home Energy Club, we only display vetted energy plans using our TrustPlan energy plan vetting process to help you find the best electricity rate and plan for your home and avoid potential bill surprises.

Check our promo codes page to check availability of a Cirro Energy promo code. You will also find electricity promo codes for other top energy providers which provide a discount off the rates of electric companies on their websites.

What are problems with electricity company review sites?

According to the electricity comparison site and consumer advocate Home Energy Club, the following are among potential problems with home energy review sources:

  • Government comparison sites: like the Power to Choose Texas site, government energy rate sites have demonstrated a near absence of quality control and have a history of being gamed by some unethical providers.
  • Major independent review sites: although generic review sites aren’t involved with the sale of electricity, some providers “game” the sites, using deceptive practices to give themselves undeserved glowing reviews.
  • Texas electricity review sites: some Texas electricity ratings sites give an advantage to some providers in the way they curate customer reviews in return for payment of special fees

Why does Power to Choose (government site) get many complaints?

Power to Choose is the electricity comparison site run by the Texas state government, and it has been characterized by an alarming number of consumer complaints. Lack of quality control seems to be the problem that has resulted in:

  • Tricking residents into choosing energy plans with deceptive gimmick rates, causing Texas consumers to experience terrible bill surprises
  • Discussions among state leaders regarding a need to shut down the government-run site
  • The Public Utility Commission chairman stated that the feasibility of the state government running a commercial website may be reconsidered provides the best alternative to Power to Choose in Texas because the consumer-centric comparison site doesn’t display deceptive plans from unscrupulous providers, and the site uses the TrustPlan™ vetting process to help cut bill surprises.

You should always read a plan’s EFL details to decide if it’s a fit for you, but our system does the tedious math to help you compare estimated costs. Of course, your future bill amounts will depend on your future usage.

You will find a widget on Home Energy Club which fetches your home’s energy usage data from Smart Meter Texas (SMT) and runs calculations of the rate structures of energy plans to help you conveniently estimate the cost of energy plans you are considering, based on your prior 12 months of energy usage as reported by SMT.

In one of the text panels of the widget, you will see an authorization button. By checking the permission box above the fields in which you enter your name and email address, and clicking on the authorization button, you are authorizing Smart Meter Texas to provide us with your location’s energy usage information so that our system can run cost calculations. It’s important to note that errors can occur when developing and running calculations, and the Company does not guarantee that its cost numbers are correct. You should always read the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for each energy plan you are considering before enrolling, and make an independent decision on whether the plan is an appropriate fit for your home based on your own calculations and all the information disclosed by energy providers in the EFL.
