Cheapest Electricity Rates in Copperas Cove

When comparing electricity plans in Copperas Cove, you will notice that bill credit plans offer the lowest rates in the market. However, these are not straightforward prices, such as those you can expect from fixed-rate plans.

  • Most bill credit plans charge a very high base rate, up to 24 cents per kWh.
  • However, these plans provide usage-based bill credits of up to $150, which apply when your monthly usage reaches certain thresholds — usually 1,000 or 2,000 kWh.
  • Monthly bill credits can reduce your effective rate to around 10 to 13 cents per kWh, even if the actual rate on your plan is much higher.

Assume your home uses 1,100 kWh on a plan with a base rate of 20 cents per kWh and a $100 credit at 1,000 kWh. In this case, you would normally pay $220, but the bill credit reduces this amount to $120 — an effective rate of 10.9 cents per kWh. However, if your usage drops to 900 kWh the next month, you won’t receive the bill credit, and you’ll pay $180.

Fixed-rate plans reward you with lower bills when you reduce your electricity usage. In contrast, bill credit plans often encourage you to use more energy to earn the discounted rate regularly. We generally don’t recommend bill credit plans for Copperas Cove residents.

Average Residential Rates in Copperas Cove

The average electricity rate in Copperas Cove is 14.2 cents per kWh as of April 2025, while the statewide average electricity rate is 14.68, according to the EIA.

Usually, you can find the lowest electricity prices through bill credit plans, promotional short-term plans and during off-peak hours in time-of-use plans. On the other hand, you can usually find the highest rates under two scenarios:

  • In bill credit plans, when your monthly usage falls outside the eligible range for credits
  • In time-of-use plans during peak-demand hours

When looking specifically at the electricity plans and providers featured on Home Energy Club, you can find rates from 11.4 to 17.6 cents per kWh, based on a monthly usage of 1,000 kWh.

What Is a Good Energy Rate in Copperas Cove?

Considering only fixed-rate electricity plans with predictable monthly bills, a rate around 16 cents per kWh is a good deal in Copperas Cove as of April 2025. During the middle of spring or fall, when electricity rates usually drop, you may find plans below 15 cents per kWh.

  • Electricity rates tend to spike in summer and winter, when air conditioners and heating systems increase power demand across the grid.
  • Since Texas has a competitive electricity market influenced by supply and demand, high-consumption periods usually result in high rates.

If you also consider bill credit plans or other plan types with “pricing gimmicks,” you can find advertised rates as low as 10 to 13 cents per kWh. However, these rates are normally subject to usage-based bill credits or specific consumption schedules. The same plans that advertise low rates may charge over 20 cents per kWh when you don’t meet certain requirements.

Which Utility Company serves Copperas Cove?

When you select an energy company in Copperas Cove, you are specifically choosing a retail electricity provider (REP) — or the company that supplies your kilowatt-hours. However, a separate company known as the transmission and distribution utility (TDU) or “poles and wires” company operates the local power grid

Electricity providers compete for residential and business customers across Texas, but only one TDU operates in any given location.

Oncor Electric Delivery is the TDU for the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and most surrounding areas, including Copperas Cove. Regardless of your electricity provider and plan, Oncor adds the following fees to all monthly power bills in its service area:

  • Base Charge: $4.23 per month
  • Delivery Charge: 5.0029 cents per kWh

Contact Oncor directly for any issues with power outages or downed power lines.

How To Choose an Electricity Plan in Copperas Cove

Many homeowners switch their energy provider to secure a lower rate, but other common reasons to switch include customer service issues or moving.

You might also be looking for specific features only available from certain providers, such as discounted EV charging schedules or solar buyback programs. Regardless of your reason for switching plans, the following steps can make the process easier:

  • Know your monthly energy usage: Electricity plans display their pricing at 500 kWh, 1,000 kWh and 2,000 kWh per month. When comparing plans, focus on the usage tier closest to your average consumption. We suggest reviewing your electric bills for a year to account for seasonal fluctuations.
  • Compare electricity plans in your ZIP code: Energy plans, rates and providers vary based on where you live in the state. To compare plans in your area, shop using your ZIP code.
  • Consider your preferred features: After filtering plans by ZIP code, you may still have dozens of options. The selection process becomes easier if you look for specific features, such as straightforward rates or 100% green energy.
  • Select a contract length: Most electricity plans have contract terms of 12, 24 or 36 months, but you can find options ranging from three to 60 months. We recommend 12-month plans to lock in your rate for an entire year, but you can sometimes get discounts by enrolling in longer plans.
  • Before enrolling in any plan, review its terms carefully: Selecting an electricity plan based on advertised rates can be a mistake. These prices often use enticingly low rates while hiding confusing rate structures that can lead to billing headaches. Read the fine print to rule out hidden fees, minimum usage fees, tiered rates or other “gimmicks.”

Plan Types Available in Copperas Cove

Choosing from over 130 electricity plans can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the deregulated energy market. However, we can classify most Copperas Cove energy plans into six broad categories, making the selection process easier:

Based on our research, you can expect the most predictable monthly energy costs from a straightforward fixed-rate energy plan. However, depending on your energy needs, other plans may suit your household.

What To Know About Electricity In Copperas Cove

Copperas Cove electricity plans offer various rate types and contract lengths and may include features ranging from 100% green energy to autopay discounts. While energy shopping can feel challenging, you’ll be better prepared for the unexpected by reviewing the following tips.

1) Always Review the Electricity Facts Label (EFL)

Just like the nutrition label breaks down ingredients and calories in food products, the electricity facts label (EFL) breaks down an electricity plan’s charges, discounts, and terms and conditions. Texas energy providers are legally required to publish an EFL for each plan, which must follow a specific format. Electricity providers may exclude some fees and unfavorable terms from their marketing materials, but they cannot hide anything on their EFLs.

If you review the EFLs when comparing energy plans in Copperas Cove, you can easily rule out plans with hidden fees or other “gimmicks.”

2) Check the Early Termination Fee (ETF) When Comparing Plans

Most electricity plans include an early termination fee (ETF), a financial penalty for leaving the plan before its contract ends.

  • Some providers, such as TriEagle Energy and 4Change Energy, charge $20 per month remaining in your contract.
  • Other providers charge a flat cancellation fee regardless of when you cancel, ranging from $150 in 12-month plans to around $295 or $395 in longer plans.

The ETF is only an issue if you need to switch your plan early, but we recommend checking it out regardless.

3) Beware of Free Nights and Weekends Energy Plans

Electricity plans with free nights, free weekends or any other free energy periods can seem like a great deal initially — but there is a catch. These plans usually charge very high rates outside of their free periods, sometimes exceeding 30 cents per kWh. Even if you can shift your energy usage toward the free periods, remember that some devices, such as your refrigerator and HVAC equipment, operate around the clock.

4) Know Your Green Energy Options

Some electricity providers such as Gexa Energy, Rhythm Energy and Green Mountain Energy offer 100% renewable energy by default in all their electricity plans. Other providers, such as Express Energy and Just Energy, offer green energy as an additional feature for their plans, usually for less than $10 per month. Finally, some providers, such as TriEagle Energy, offer traditional and green plans.

There is a common misconception that green energy is more expensive, but this is not always true. For example, Rhythm Energy sometimes offers rates below 15 cents per kWh during spring and fall.

5) Commercial Electricity in Copperas Cove

Commercial electricity rates are usually lower than residential rates in Texas. Generally, if your business has a monthly bill below $2,500 and less than five power meters, you can choose a commercial electricity plan online — just like when shopping for residential rates. However, if your monthly bill exceeds $2,500 or you have at least five power meters, you must contact electricity providers directly to request customized plan options.

Switching Providers or Moving To Copperas Cove

Switching electricity providers in Copperas Cove is simple with Home Energy Club. Using our platform, you can filter local electricity plans by features such as contract length, green energy content or home size. You can also sort rates from lowest to highest to identify the most affordable options.

Once you select an electricity plan, we only need your contact details and service address to sign you up — the online form only takes around five minutes.

Because prices can change based on supply and demand, spring and fall tend to be the most affordable times of year to shop. During these seasons, the mild weather reduces demand for climate control, such as air conditioning or space heating. Reduced demand typically yields decreased energy prices.

We strongly advise against starting a new electricity plan in summer or winter, when prices spike. If your move-in date coincides with these high-demand seasons, consider shopping even earlier. Many providers will let you schedule a future service start date up to 90 days in advance. This could allow you to lock in a competitive rate before prices rise in summer or winter.

If you’re moving to a different address, shop as soon as you know your move-in date. While many providers offer same-day service, you can usually find much lower rates by shopping in advance. Also, there is no need to worry about the early termination fee (ETF) — Texas law exempts you from cancellation fees if you switch plans while moving to another address.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best electricity provider in Copperas Cove?

As of April 2025, our top-rated electricity providers in Copperas Cove are TriEagle Energy, 4Change Energy and Express Energy. These companies offer fixed-rate plans under 16 cents per kWh and have earned scores above 4.5 out of 5 stars in our review methodology. Other top-rated companies include TXU Energy and Reliant Energy.

What is the cheapest electricity provider in Copperas Cove?

Considering all plans in the market, including bill credit plans with monthly usage thresholds, four companies tied for the lowest rate: Gexa Energy, Frontier Utilities, Cirro Energy and Discount Power. However, the ultra-cheap rates these companies advertise may only apply if you qualify for the bill credits, which require a minimum monthly usage of 1,000 kWh. If your consumption falls lower, your effective rate can increase to 24 cents per kWh.

Is TXU Energy a good choice in Copperas Cove?

We recommend TXU Energy if you own a home solar system that generates excess energy during the day. The TXU Solar Buyback Match 12 plan pays you 15 cents per kWh for excess energy exported to the grid — one of the best solar buyback rates in the market. Additionally, if there is a month where your solar credits exceed your bill, you can “bank” unused credits for future billing cycles.

However, if you don’t own solar panels and are looking for a standard fixed-rate plan, TXU tends to charge premium rates that may not suit all budgets. Its fixed rates typically range from 17 to 19 cents per kWh, while other providers offer plans below 16 cents per kWh.

What company maintains power lines in Copperas Cove?

Oncor Electric Delivery operates and maintains the local grid in Copperas Cove. You can call Oncor at 888-313-4747 to report power outages, downed lines or other grid-related issues.
