Energy Plans in Texas
Tara Energy offers electricity with competitively priced one-year and multi-year fixed-rate residential plans.
Fixed-rate plans let you lock in a rate for the length of your contract, protecting you from rate spikes long term. They also produce more predictable energy bills.
Simple Choice plans
Their most popular plans are their Simple Choice plans, which come with either 12 or 24-month terms.
Key features of these price-protected plans include:
- Fixed energy rates
- $4.95 Base Charge
- Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) fees
- Early Termination Fees (ETFs)
Other plans
Tara has a range of other plans, including:
- Mega Saver plans
- Basics plans
- Nights Free
- Weekends Free plans
With fixed rates, their Mega Saver plans feature bill credits if you stay within a certain usage level.
Their Basics plans don’t have the lowest rates, but they do have the most straightforward rate structure, which can yield the most predictable bills. They also have longer terms, from 24 months to 60 months.
If you’re interested in “free” electricity plans, they have time-of-use offerings in their Nights Free and Weekends Free plans. If the brunt of your electricity usage occurs during those free windows, these plans may save you money.
But bear in mind that the rate charged during non-free hours can be quite high. Carefully read each plan’s Electricity Fact Label (EFL) to make sure its average rate meets your usage levels.
They don’t typically offer variable rate plans.
Green Energy
Tara Energy electric plans include a green energy option sourced from wind energy and solar energy.
It’s as simple as checking the clean energy add-on box on any of their plans. You’ll pay an extra $9.99 a month and get the benefits of 100% sustainable energy.

Switching, Moving, Cancellation Fees
Whether you’re switching providers, relocating, or simply canceling your account, it pays to do your research. For quick tips on energy in Texas, check out our Savvy Shopper’s Guide.
But to make sure any plan you’re considering is right for you, start with the EFL.
What’s the Electricity Facts Label?
The EFL, or Electricity Facts Label, is a state-mandated document that provides all the details you need to know about any energy plan.
It includes vital details, like rates per kWh, plan type, and any other additional fees. It’s the best way to get an apples-to-apples plan comparison.
Transferring Your Electricity Plan
If you want to transfer your Tara Energy service to another location, simply call Tara’s customer support phone number, or fill out a transfer request online.
Be sure to notify the energy supplier at least 30 days in advance to avoid any interruptions in your energy service.
Does Tara Energy have a cancellation fee?
Yes, if you terminate your plan before the end of your contract, you’ll owe an Early Termination Fee (ETF). However, if you’re moving, they’ll waive the penalty.
Tara Energy helps ease the process of canceling by offering reasonable Early Termination Fees (ETFs). Currently most of their plans feature an ETF of $175.
If you’re switching to Tara Energy, you may qualify for reimbursement of up to $150 on your previous provider’s cancellation fee. Once approved, the reimbursement will be applied to your new Tara electricity account.
Report a Power Outage
If you experience a Tara Energy power outage, you should call your local Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU).
Tara is a Retail Energy Provider (REP), which means they’re not responsible for delivering electricity or correcting outages, they’re only responsible for marketing and billing energy.
It’s the TDUs that are responsible for correcting outages. Learn more about the difference between REPs and TDUs.
