TXU offers a variety of convenient residential electricity plans in Texas, many of which focus on providing renewable energy (green energy). TXU has plans that focus on providing convenient pricing perks based on your lifestyle, such as plans that include free electricity at nights, bundled rates, discounts for TXU, short-term contracts, and other features. Select electricity plans let you rely either entirely or partially on solar power during the day. You can reach TXU customer service at their toll-free phone number 800-818-6132.

TXU Rates: Fixed vs Variable

Whether you are looking for TXU plans that allow you to lock in Texas electricity rates (fixed-rate plans) so you’ll have more predictable bills, or month-to-month variable rate plans that allow for cancellations at any time with no penalty, you can typically find a service that fits your needs. Also, TXU offers one-year and multi-year plans with fixed rates. Be sure to read the Electricity Fact Label to determine if you’ll pay a higher rate for special features.

No Deposit Electricity

If you are interested in “no deposit electricity”, energy providers such as TXU Energy do not require a deposit if you meet their minimum credit standards. Read our helpful guide to learn more about no deposit electricity options

TXU Electricity Rates by Zone

TXU rates are available in Texas in all deregulated energy areas and cities (about 85% of the state). Rates will vary by transmission utility zone (TDU). For example, TXU Energy Houston rates, which are associated with the Centerpoint zone, and TXU Energy Dallas rates associated with the Oncor zone, will be different, as will rates for other zones. You may wish to perform a Google search for TXU electricity rates near me to compare against what you are paying now.

If you’re moving to a city in Texas, you’ll find helpful information on our Texas Cities electricity page, which includes links to Texas electric companies in Houston, electric companies in Dallas, and those in many other cities. On each city page you will also find information regarding energy rates, EV charging stations, and services available to help you reduce your energy bill and reduce your carbon output.

TXU may not always be the cheapest electric company or always have the best electricity rates, but it is one of the most established and respected light companies in Texas. TriEagle Energy, a sister company of TXU, is a highly trusted brand as well, and offers rates that are generally lower than TXU’s. Use our handy Texas electricity Savvy Shoppers Guide to help you choose the right plan for your home.

TXU Reviews & Ratings

While some customers have expressed complaints in TXU Energy reviews, the biggest issues that have been reported include disconnections after a missed bill and confusion regarding the billing process and procedures.

At Home Energy Club, we collect unbiased customer satisfaction data and reviews from independent reviews sites including the State of Texas Public Utility Commission Complaints Statistics and other review sources.

We use the information collected along with our Home Energy Club/Amazon customer rating survey results to determine a rating score for each energy provider.

HEC TXU Energy Rating Score: 4.5/5

TXU Energy Customer Ratings

TXU Energy shows relatively high rating scores on the reviewed categories. TXU received a score of over 4.5 in four of the five reviewed categories.

TXU Energy Customer Reviews

Visit our TXU Energy Reviews page to read more reviews and get more rating information.

It’s helpful to note that TXU reviews, like all reviews of major energy companies, tend to have a disproportionate number of negative comments because customers are much more apt to write a review if they’ve had a bad experience.

TXU has first-rate customer service, so make sure you call TXU phone number 800-818-6132 and speak with an operator about any questions regarding your bill.

TXU Renewable Energy Plans

TXU Energy offers green energy plans associated with renewable energy generation sources such as solar energy, which help to reduce CO2 and combat climate change. You would likely be surprised by the amount of CO2 emitted in association with traditional fossil-based energy plans.

The company provides several electricity plans in Texas connected with solar power. These plans provide consumers access to green energy purchased from the state’s solar farms. You are able to power your home with renewable energy in Texas, while avoiding the expense and complexity of installing your own solar panels.

Renewable energy may also be sourced from wind farms, biofuels, or hydroelectricity. While most energy providers in Texas draw on numerous sources of green energy, TXU is more focused on solar power as its eco-friendly power source. TriEagle Energy’s green plans are associated with multiple green sources, including wind and solar, and TriEagle’s green energy rates are usually quite a bit lower than those of TXU, even though both companies are subsidiaries of Vistra Energy. Check TriEagle and TXU rates here on Home Energy Club. You can compare renewable TXU plans with those of other electricity providers on Home Energy Club’s green energy page

Starting TXU Energy Service and Renewal

To start service with TXU, you must have a home, apartment or condo within a deregulated service area. Make sure to choose the right size TXU plan for your residence to help save money on electric bills. Your plan size should be based on your energy usage. For instance, the best TXU plan for an apartment is typically 500 kWh per month. For help determining your exact energy usage, check out our helpful Smart Meter guide.

TXU energy allows you to receive no deposit electricity if you have good credit. Electricity deposits are fully refundable after a year of on-time payments.

You can begin the process of starting service at your new address online or by contacting new customer sales at TXU phone number 855-545-5206.

It’s best to never allow your energy contract to expire without either renewing or switching to a new plan or provider. If you allow your contract to expire, you can usually expect to be placed on an expensive default rate until you take action to renew or switch.

TXU Energy Bill Pay

TXU Energy bill pay is relatively intuitive and easy to understand. Though energy bill payment methods vary depending on the plan you choose, you can access your TXU bill pay information conveniently online through the TXU login page for MyAccount. This section of the site gives you important insights into your energy usage, pricing structure, and service, so you’re not hit with any surprises.

Your TXU Energy MyEnergy dashboard offers a Texas electricity chart with your energy usage, so you can see when your electricity usage peaks. The portal will also provide helpful tips on saving energy to reduce your electricity bill during those peak hours, and you can cut your personal CO2 at the same time.

Tips to Lower your TXU Energy Bill

Changing your power company isn’t the only way you can take control of your energy expenses. You can also reduce your utility bill by taking more mindful actions to control your electricity usage.

Plug major appliances into smart power strips that turn off on their own when there’s no activity. Use timers or smart apps to control your lights so they’re never left on. Simply set them to turn off when your family usually leaves for work and school. Install a smart thermostat (like a Nest Thermostat or Eco Thermostat) that will adjust the temperature automatically to use less heating and cooling energy at night and when the home is empty during the day. These measures will help your home become more efficient with minimal effort.

Switching, Moving and TXU Energy Cancellation Fees

Before you settle on a new energy plan, make sure you compare all your options. Once you’ve evaluated your home’s needs, read the Texas Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for each energy plan you consider to learn important plan information such as cancellation fees. Any fees can be found in the “Disclosure Chart” section. The EFL is a state-mandated summary of what each plan offers. The simplified approach makes it easier to see how one option compares to another. Beware of problems with using the Power to Choose Texas government site for plan comparisons.

Available Now: If you are planning to switch from TXU, see special discounted rates on our home page from TXU’s sister company, TriEagle Energy.

Transferring your TXU Energy Plan

If you’re transferring your TXU service to a new home, you can put in a request online. For a modest fee, you can even schedule the exact date for the transfer. If you’re transferring your existing electric service into a new name or new party, you will need to speak with a TXU customer service representative over the phone to assist with the process.

Report a TXU Energy Power Outage

When you’re reporting a TXU Energy power outage, it’s important to understand the difference between a retail electricity provider (REP) and a transmission and delivery utility company (TDU, or TDSP). A REP purchases power from electricity generation companies and resells it to homeowners. TXU is a REP. TDUs are the entities that transfer that energy to your home.

If you have a TXU power outage, you will need to contact your TDU rather than TXU. These include Oncor Electric Delivery in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, CenterPoint Energy in the Houston area,Texas-New Mexico Power Company, and AEP Texas (two zones). You must reach out directly to these companies to handle outages. Bookmark our Texas Power Outage Guide for phone numbers of each TDU, which include:

  • Oncor: 888-313-4747
  • AEP: 866-223-8508
  • CenterPoint Energy: 800-332-7143
  • Texas New Mexico Power (TNMP): 888-866-7456
  • Sharyland Utilities: 800-545-4513

About TXU

TXU Energy is a highly trusted electricity company in Texas, tracing its origins back to the Dallas Electric Company, which began providing power to North Texas in 1882. In 1912, The Texas Power & Light Company consolidated 13 electric companies under General Electric’s Electric Bond & Share Company. This would later become Texas Electric Service Company. After several other acquisitions and decades of growth, TXU launched in 1999 as a new brand for what was by then the Texas Utilities Electric Company.

When the competitive electricity market opened in Texas in 2002, TXU Energy offered service as a certified retail electricity provider (also called a retail electric company, light company, energy provider and power company). TXU has become a leader in energy provider technology, offering smart tools and services to help consumers understand and manage their electricity usage.
