Rates & Plans

TXU offers a variety of convenient residential electricity plans in Texas, many of which include green energy.

Their plans provide pricing perks based on your lifestyle and include free electricity at nights, bundled rates, short-term contracts, and other features. Some of their most popular options are time-of-use plans.

Free Nights & Solar Days

TXU Energy Free Nights & Solar Days is a “free” electricity plan with 100% renewable energy content.

You’ll enjoy free power all night, from 8 pm to 5 am. During the day, you’ll get solar energy without having to install solar panels.

Wondering, “What are the off-peak hours for TXU Energy?” The answer is off-peak hours are during those free nighttime periods, from 8 pm to 5 am.

Note that the names and terms of their plans may change periodically, so check current plans for updated information.

Season Pass

Season Pass is another time-of-use plan, delivering 50% off your electricity rates during high demand seasons.

The Season Pass discount applies from June 1 to August 31, and again from December to February 28.

Key features of both of these plans include:

  • Discounted rates during select times
  • Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) fees
  • Early Termination Fees (ETFs)
  • Competitive electricity rates

Note that “free electricity” plans, or time-of-use plans, show low rates based on averages. Actual rates vary based on when you use most of your energy.

Rates charged during paid times are often quite high. If your usage falls outside free times, you may get a nasty bill surprise. Bill shocks are also common on plans with bill credits if your usage strays outside a set kWh range.

While they aren’t always the cheapest electric company, they’re one of the most established, respected companies in Texas. For a highly trusted brand with cheaper energy rates, consider TriEagle Energy, TXU’s sister company.

TXU also has a range of other popular plans, such as:

Renewable Energy

TXU Energy offers green energy using sources like solar energy, helping reduce CO2 and combat climate change.

Many of their most popular plans are 100% clean energy, including their Free Nights & Solar Days plan.

They also offer electric vehicle-friendly plans, like their Free EV Miles plan.

Their renewable energy plans give Texans access to green energy purchased from the state’s solar farms. That means you can get solar power without the burden of buying and installing your own solar panels.

If you already have solar panels, consider their Solar Buyback Match plan. It lets you lock in low, fixed rates while also getting bill credits for excess solar power generated by your panels.

Switching, Moving, Cancellation Fees

Before switching, transferring, or canceling your current energy plan, make sure you compare all your options. Start with our Savvy Shoppers Guide for easy tips on choosing the right plan for your home.

Once you’ve evaluated your home’s needs, read the Texas Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for each energy plan you’re considering.

Understanding your EFL

Whether you’re switching plans or providers, be sure to consult the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). The EFL provides an apples-to-apples comparison of rates based on average usage levels, 500 kWh, 1,000 kWh, and 2,000 kWh.

Get the most out of the EFL with Smart Meter Texas, which helps you find your home’s exact energy usage. Check out our Smart Meter Guide to learn more.

Transferring your service

When transferring your TXU service, simply submit a request online or via telephone. Provide 30 days notice to avoid any loss of service.

For a modest fee, you can even schedule the exact date for the transfer. Note that if you’re transferring your existing electric service into a new name or to a new party, you’ll have to do so over the phone.

How can I cancel my TXU contract?

You can cancel your contract over the phone or online.

If you terminate your plan before the end of your term, you’ll owe an Early Termination Fee (ETF) unless you’re moving or there’s 14 days left in your term.

Currently, their cancellation fees vary depending on the length of your contract, ranging from $150 to $395. Be sure to check your plan’s EFL to find its ETF.

Report a Power Outage

When reporting a TXU Energy power outage, contact your Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) directly for the fastest service. Energy providers don’t correct outages and will only redirect your call to the utility company. Learn more about the difference between REPs and TDUs.
