It offers some of the cheapest advertised electricity rates in Texas and over 20 electricity plans that meet the energy needs of a wide range of customers. These plans include benefits such as solar buyback rates and free EV charging schedules.

Additionally, Gexa Energy extends a 60-day satisfaction guarantee with all its electricity plans, allowing customers to switch their plans without paying the early termination fee (ETF).

Gexa Energy serves all deregulated areas of Texas.

Gexa Energy Plans and Rates in Texas

Gexa Energy offers a wide range of plan types, and its rates vary from ultra-cheap to well above the statewide average of 15.60 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), according to November data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The provider advertises some of the cheapest rates in Texas with its bill credit plans. However, it also offers several options with slightly higher rates and more predictable monthly energy costs. When shopping for Gexa energy plans, compare rates in your ZIP code to ensure you’re reviewing rates that are available in your area.

Gexa Energy Types Plans and Guarantees

Gexa Energy offers the following types of electricity plans in Texas, which all offer 100% renewable energy:

  • Fixed-rate plans: The Gexa Light Saver 12 plan locks in your electricity rate for 12 months, protecting you from price hikes. For those who prefer longer contracts, Gexa also offers fixed-rate plans with 24 and 36-month terms. The 12-month plan has an early termination fee (ETF) of $150, while the longer plans have an ETF of $295.
  • Bill credit plans: Gexa offers several plans with usage-based bill credits ranging from $50 to $150 per month. For example, the Gexa Eco Saver Plus 12 plan offers a $100 bill credit when your usage is at least 1,000 kWh. However, the minimum consumption level for the credit varies by plan. While bill credit plans may advertise ultra-low rates, they can also lead to unpredictable monthly energy costs if you don’t consistently qualify for the usage-based credit.
  • Free energy plans: The Gexa Free 3 Day Weekends 12 plan offers free electricity from Friday to Sunday but charges well above 20 cents per kWh from Monday to Thursday. This plan can be viable if your electricity usage ocurs on the weekend, but otherwise may surprise you with high bills.
  • Solar buyback plans: The Gexa Solar Export 12 plan lets you sell excess energy from solar panels while getting an affordable fixed rate when you use the grid. The Battery Benefits 12 pays a higher buyback rate if your solar panels have a battery that can supply power during high demand.

The light company offers a range of other plan types, including electric vehicle (EV) charging plans, smart thermostat plans and senior discount plans. While Gexa offers variable-rate plans, we don’t typically recommend this plan type. With rates that change month-to-month, variable-rate plans inevitably lead to unpredictable energy bills.

Gexa Energy provides a 60-Day Happiness Guarantee with all its residential electricity plans. If you’re not satisfied with the rates and features of your chosen plan, you can switch to any other Gexa plan without any penalties — as long as you make the change within 60 days of your activation date. However, note that this benefit is only available once per customer.

Our Take on Gexa Energy

Gexa Energy earns a score of 4.6 out of 5 stars in the Home Energy Club scoring methodology for Texas electricity providers. Gexa stands out with above-average scores for online experience (4.8 out of 5), customer service (4.5 out of 5) and customer retention (5 out of 5), its highest-scoring category. Gexa also scored 4.2 out of 5 for customer satisfaction, which is slightly below average. The company offers 100% renewable energy in all its plans, which include a wide range of customer benefits and perks.

While Gexa scores well across all categories in our review, it offers few energy plans with predictable monthly electricity bills. Many of Gexa’s energy plans advertise ultra-cheap energy rates using bill credits, which can lead to unpredictable monthly energy costs. Depending on the specific plan, bill credits can range from $50 to $150 per month at usage levels ranging from 500 kWh to 2,000 kWh.

These plans offer savings if your consumption stays within the eligible range for bill credits, but your rate can increase to more than 20 cents per kWh in months where you miss the credit.

Gexa Energy Overview

Gexa Energy was among the first competitive electricity providers in Texas. The company was incorporated in 2001 before Texas completed its deregulation process and started operating in 2002, the same year the market opened to competition. Over the years, Gexa has expanded beyond Texas and now operates in 17 other states and Washington, D.C.

  • Year Founded: 2001
  • Parent Company: NextEra Energy Resources
  • Headquarters: 601 Travis Street, Suite 1400, Houston, Texas 77002

Contact Gexa Energy

Gexa Energy offers multiple communication channels for its customers:

Outage reporting: To report a power outage or downed power lines, you must contact the local transmission and distribution utility or “poles and wires” company.

Where Is Gexa Energy Available?

Gexa Energy offers its electricity plans in all six service areas of the Texas deregulated electricity market:

Gexa Energy Customer Reviews and Ratings

Online Gexa Energy reviews are largely positive. The company boasts a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews, based on over 24,000 reviews, and 3.99 out of 5 stars on the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Gexa’s high score at the BBB is a notable achievement since many competing energy providers have 1 or 2-star ratings on the site.

What Customers Like

What Customers Don’t Like

  • Bill credit plans with deceptive marketing: Most negative reviews of Gexa relate to its bill credit plans. Customers often sign up for these plans due to the low advertised rates but end up paying twice as much in months when they miss the usage-based credits.
  • Inefficient customer service: Gexa has received complaints about its customer service department. Customers have reported long waiting times when calling, unanswered email messages and poor communication in general.
  • High cancellation fees: Negative reviews also mention Gexa's early termination fees (ETF), which can reach up to $295 in some electricity plans.

Who Should Pick Gexa Energy?

Gexa Energy offers more than 20 electricity plans for a wide range of customers. However, the following types of customers may benefit from Gexa’s service offering:

Clean Energy Enthusiasts

The Lone Star State generates less than 40% of its electricity from clean sources, but Gexa offers 100% renewable energy in all its electricity plans. For this reason, Gexa is a great option for homeowners who want to reduce their environmental impact.

Electric Vehicle Owners

Gexa offers electricity plans with free EV charging from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. During this schedule, all electricity used for EV charging has an energy charge of 0 cents per kWh. However, you’ll still have to pay our utility delivery fees. However, note that the free energy schedule only applies to EV chargers — you’ll pay as normal for electricity usage by other home appliances.

Solar Battery Owners

Gexa Energy offers two types of solar buyback plans: the Gexa Solar Export 12 and the Gexa Battery Benefits 12. If you own a solar battery, the Gexa Battery Benefits 12 plan compensates you for excess energy at retail prices and may be a good choice for your needs. However, we don’t recommend the Gexa Solar Export 12 plan because you can get higher buyback rates from Green Mountain Energy and TXU Energy.

High-Consumption Homes

We don’t usually recommend bill credit plans because they can make monthly power bills unpredictable. However, some Gexa Energy plans offer bill credits of up to $150 for customers using more than 2,000 kWh per month. If you own a large home and your electricity usage is consistently above 2,000 kWh, you may benefit from one of these plans. We recommend checking your power bills for the past year to ensure your usage stays above 2,000 kWh.

How To Get Started with Gexa Energy

Signing up for a Gexa Energy electricity plan is simple with Home Energy Club. Just input your ZIP code, and our platform will display electricity plans from multiple providers in your area. Our website has multiple filtering tools, including the option to display plans from a specific provider, such as Gexa Energy.

Once you have selected an electricity plan, we need only your address and contact information to complete the sign-up process. However, if your current plan has not reached the end of its contract term, you may owe an early termination fee (ETF).

Moving or Transferring Service with Gexa Energy

If you’re already a Gexa Energy customer, you can easily move your service to another address at the My Account customer service portal. Once you have a move-in date, you can schedule your service start at the new address up to 30 days in advance. Gexa also offers same-day service, but only if you submit your request before 2 p.m. from Monday to Friday and if your new address already has a power meter.

When moving to another address, you can switch your electricity plan without early termination fees (ETF). While you can keep the same Gexa Energy plan, we recommend checking their options before moving. You may find plans with lower rates or additional customer benefits, and you have a one-time opportunity to switch without cancellation fees.

Is Gexa Energy Right For You?

Gexa Energy has pros and cons like any other provider. If you’re looking for a clean electricity provider, Gexa offers 100% renewable energy in all its plans. The company offers an ample selection of electricity plans, but two types of customers in particular can access the best features:

  • EV owners: Free charging schedule from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Solar battery owners: $50 monthly credit and a buyback rate of 16.9 cents per kWh

Gexa has received negative comments for its bill credit plans. Some customers have signed up due to ultra-cheap advertised rates but pay over 20 cents per kWh in months when they miss the bill credits. Before signing up for any plan, carefully review the electricity facts label (EFL).

Alternatives To Gexa Energy

If you’re looking for providers similar to Gexa Energy, Green Mountain Energy and Rhythm Energy offer multiple plans with 100% green energy. These companies have fewer plan options, but they excel in other areas.

  • Green Mountain stands out for its solar buyback plans with high compensation rates.
  • Rhythm has the most affordable green energy plans in the market.
