Which is the best energy provider?

First, remember that retail electricity providers (REPs) are marketing companies that buy kilowatt hours and resell them to their customers. They do not repair power outages and cannot get your electricity turned back on any faster than their competitors. The Transmission and Distribution Utility (known as a TDU or TDSP) transmits your electricity and corrects outages, and they do not know which REP you use.

There are several factors to think about when choosing a REP for your electricity service:

The REP’s reputation:

Before considering price, you should always make sure your REP is a reliable and trustworthy company before enrolling with them. The non-trustworthy providers may advertise a low rate, but it’s likely to be a gimmick rate that will cost you more than expected and cause monster billing headaches.

You should look for companies that have been in business for at least 10 years in Texas, which demonstrates that they have survived regulatory scrutiny for many years and are likely to be financially stable. Professional third party reviews are always a good resource, such as the Better Business Bureau ratings and J. D. Power and Associates rankings.

Customer reviews can be a good source as well, but it is important to remember that most customers only post a review after a bad experience, and some companies “game” the review websites by posting reviews in their favor. Not every opinion you read online can be taken at face value.

The energy rate offered:

Your rate can vary by location (each rate is zip code specific), and using the state-mandated Electricity Fact Label (EFL) will allow you to compare plans on an apples-to-apples basis. The ability to lock in a low rate for multiple years can also be important, and most REPs offer long-term plans.

It’s always critical to watch out for gimmicky rates and unfair pricing that some REPs offer. When you are reviewing the EFL for any plan, pay attention to the pricing structure. If the pricing structure is complicated and has a long list of conditions, your actual rate may be unpredictable and the plan may cause a billing surprise.

Choosing a REP and a plan with simple pricing, such as a low energy charge and a small monthly base fee is the easiest way to ensure savings on your monthly bill and cut the likelihood of surprises. One of the best REPs for straight-forward rates is TriEagle Energy, which has been in business over 15 years and specializes in simple plans that help customers avoid billing surprises. You can use TriEagle’s promo code BRIGHT to receive a rate that’s lower than the regular rates shown on their website.

It’s important to note that there are legitimate plans with very low rates that are more complex, and are based on monthly energy usage ranges. As long as you spend the time to make sure the plan fits your home’s usage pattern, you can save quite a bit of money. Sometimes their rates are as much as 20% less than the market average for the same term length because the plans are customized to fit specific usage patterns. One provider offering these low rates is Gexa Energy, a well established, reputable brand. You can use Gexa’s promo code GEXATX to gain access to their discount plans.

The energy provider’s operational standards:

Some REPs put real effort into their customer service, which can make a big difference in your experience with their enrollment, renewals and billing. The operations behind the scenes can also affect your satisfaction by giving you consistently low rates, by communicating useful information about your energy usage to help you reduce your bill, and by offering bonuses for your home like smart thermostats.

You should always read a plan’s EFL details to decide if it’s a fit for you, but our system does the tedious math to help you compare estimated costs. Of course, your future bill amounts will depend on your future usage.

You will find a widget on Home Energy Club which fetches your home’s energy usage data from Smart Meter Texas (SMT) and runs calculations of the rate structures of energy plans to help you conveniently estimate the cost of energy plans you are considering, based on your prior 12 months of energy usage as reported by SMT.

In one of the text panels of the widget, you will see an authorization button. By checking the permission box above the fields in which you enter your name and email address, and clicking on the authorization button, you are authorizing Smart Meter Texas to provide us with your location’s energy usage information so that our system can run cost calculations. It’s important to note that errors can occur when developing and running calculations, and the Company does not guarantee that its cost numbers are correct. You should always read the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for each energy plan you are considering before enrolling, and make an independent decision on whether the plan is an appropriate fit for your home based on your own calculations and all the information disclosed by energy providers in the EFL.
